Quartz behind the stove top

Hi houzz fellows, we are in process of selecting materials for our kitchen remodel. I have researched a lot and came down to picking quartz as countertops and backsplash as well as I don't want tiles backsplash.

The only concern I'm having is that if it is going to take the heat for years from the "gas stove top" as quartz are not heat resistant per my research online.
The slabs i'm picking is from Cambria quartz which is a top brand.

I wanted to ask this community if anyone has a different opinion of using quartz for backsplash.
Or, if you have used quartz for years behind the stove without any issues. Please guide!

It is all about proper installation of the cooktop. If the cooktop is installed with proper clearances to combustibles then there should be no issues with the quartz behind it. Just because one person has had quartz behind their cooktop without issue really means nothing.

When choosing your cooktop be sure to read the installation and clearance instructions so that you can choose one that will match what you envision that area to look like. You do not want to find out after the fact that the cooktop needs a big back guard to be able to be up against the quartz or needs to be pulled out from the wall 6 inches. Make sure whoever is installing it has these instructions and follows them.

Brand does not matter as it is all the same plastic & resin type material. What type of stove top? Brand? Model? Dies it have a backguard? What do the instructions say about keeping it from combustible materials?

Plastic burns. It doesn’t matter the brand. Put in the tall backguard required by the range manufacturer, and it won’t burn.

This site is awesome. Timely conversation, as our designer recommended we move our range from a peninsula (that will become an island) to an outside wall, for better function. It is a GE Cafe dual fuel 30 inch range with the island trim, put in just over 3 years ago. After finding this thread, found an online install information, with the only recommendation to be 2 1/2 inches from the wall in the back and 3 inches clearance on the sides, and they had no recommendations for the wall behind the stove otherwise. I called GE and the service department there confirmed that this island trim oven was ok to use on a wall counter, and that to just follow code for the wall behind it. No recommendations other than the 2 1/2 inches from the back. I discussed this with our designer, who had just recommended only 24 inch counters, and the quartz backsplash, who was pretty noncommital about needing any changes. When I did say I cook sourdough bread at least twice a week, with 500 degree ovens for warmup, she said to get tile or real stone, but didn't need to change the counter depth as the tile was the fireproofing. It will be fairly easy for us to deepen the counter about 3 inches, I will just need to have a 30 inch sink rather than a 33 inch sink on the counter that will now be 3 inches less wide. But that will be just me and our countertop/cabinet group, not sure if it is worth it to convince our designer of what is common sense to me. Now we get to work on backsplashes. This range has the simmer and smaller burners in the back, with the larger speed boil burners in the front, so not sure what the fireproof wall in the back needs to be.

Forum visitors who have complained about damage to plastic backsplashes often have as a cause hot oven venting right at the wall. If your oven venting has lower heat removal, and/or mixes some room air into the vent, then you may not need a large gap counter or a backguard. Please let us know what you find in the manual. In any case, using a large pan that directs some of the gas jet combustion plumes toward the wall would be ill advised.

Thanks Fori! Cabinet colors are staying for couple of years. Not changing yet. I am tempted to change becuase my kitchen is west facing and gets less light afteroon onwards. So brown looks very dark in natural light. White or light gray might make it more bright. Question for you- Which grout color would you choose- White or light gray? I worry white may break the beautiful blending of paint brush like strokes in the tiles. Let me know.

If your range is installed properly, you can have a tissue paper backsplash. I'm sick to death of engineered stone taking the blame for illiterate designers and installers.

I do not agree but I hate quartz for kitchens period . If you go with a real stone it will serve you better for everyday use and can safely go behind the gas range .

@Joseph Corlett, LLC - correct me if I am wrong, because I read this on another post, but the "proper install" that you cite is for the designer to add a foot of non-combustible countertop between the cooktop and the Quartz backsplash, is that right? If that is correct, how would that work in a kitchen design?

Or, as mentioned in above comments, you could use a backguard if you have a range, but that does not work for a cooktop. The OP said they have a "gas stovetop" so I don't know if that means a range or a cooktop. If the OP has a cooktop, can you please detail how to install it properly with a Quartz backsplash? This issue comes up so often on this forum, it would be great to pin this down.

@RoyHobbs I'm not Joseph but the quartz is not the issue. Following the proper clearances spelled out in the installation instructions for the particular cooktop is.

What does Cambria say about using quartz behind the range?

I do think this situation fails when the range has a heat vent at the back of the range. I do not have a heat vent at the back of my range but it's electric.

My gas top is GE monogram and it's not range, it's gas top.

It seems a lot is dependent on how the stove top is installed, I can talk to my construction guy regarding this.
I don't want to go with granite as it needs lot more maintenance that's why I was choosing Quartz. I can talk to the Cambria dealer regarding this too

That's what you pay a designer to figure out. It's not just picking pretty colors; it's making sure the products you've specified will work in a given application.

@RoyHobbs proper install depends on the range. For example, this 30" GE Cafe range appears that it can be installed directly adjacent to a quartz splash; I don't see anything called out in clearances that dictates otherwise (but by all means, someone please correct me if am incorrect and missed it).

However, Wolf dictates that their 30" all gas range must be installed 13" away from a combustable (quartz) splash. As you alluded to, one option is to pull the range 13 inches in front of that splash, which would be wonky kitchen design. The other option, that Wolf calls out, with its own bullet point at the beginning of the installation manual under Important Instructions" is a riser.

You could then put this bad boy right up against whatever the heck you want. Quartz, Tissue Paper, Degournay, that 1984 poster of Farrah Fawcett you had hanging over your bed.

@Zeen You should be able to find the installation manual on the GE website for the exact model of cooktop. Read it and understand it. Specifically look at the clearances. Also give your construction guy the instructions and be sure he understands it.

Actually most granites do not need ”more maintenance”. I’ve had several granite counters over several decades and never even sealed them. They all looked like the day tgey were installed after years of use. Some granites do need sealing once a year. The choice between granite and Quartz should be one of aesthetics - many people prefer the appearance of Quartz. There are plenty of posts on this forum about issues with Quartz maintenance and durability. There are also plenty of posts about care-free Quartz. No guarantees for either way.

Note that Verbo's image is from a range and that the burn is from the oven vent. Not relevant!

Cooktops are different. (Rangetops are in-between.) Read the mfr specs and follow them.

Wolf dictates that their gas range must be installed 13" away from a combustible wall. And no, placing tile or granite against a combustible wall does not make that wall noncombustible, at least according to the NFPA. Steel studs and cement board make a wall noncombustible.
