Is This HVX on my Sum & Substance?
Comments (8)The leaf in the first pics does not seem to have collapsed tissue, but little, rough, raised patches. The coloring on the other leaf just looks strange--a long rectangular area in which the veins are dark... I'm definitely not ready to toss this one in any case. I will be keeping a close eye on it though. Hmmm... Maybe I need another one to replace this one... (just in case, ya know :)...See MoreNeed to divide mature Sum & Substance Hosta
Comments (12)You guys are SO FUNNY! Paul I LOVED your photoshopped picture!!! Talynnp, thanks for the encouragement and pictures... right now mine is probably 5 times larger than the ones in your pictures, so I should be able to divide it the way you did and still have a good sized clump in this spot. Ken, I am thrilled to hear that you think it is not the sun! I will dig it up (carefully) and do my darndest to remove what hopefully will be fully decomposed big maple roots by now (3 years since the tree was removed) and amend the soil like crazy and replant. At the time I removed the tree, I spent like 2 days hacking at what was left of the roots after the tree removal service ground the stump and had no energy left to do the same underneath the hosta. I put in a small pond where the tree was and the hosta is about three feet from the edge below a low retaining wall. By the way, I have been top dressing it with vermicompost (from my worm farm), decomposed leaves and composted cow manure (the kind you by at Lowes). Is this a good combination to amend with? I will search for Ken's posting on moving large hosta so I can "do it right". Anyway, after seeing the picture of "my" hosta in Pauls picture - I will never be able to look at mine the same way again without laughing!!!! Thanks to all who posted. Comments (12)Bkay, I have read the article....wasn't sure if it was available to us yet. I would love to have the info! Did you google to get it or what? I have tried just about everything I've ever heard of....(not the cooking...just seems like to much trouble) the best results...though not 100% I have gotten is to put potted hostas in hot full sun, water very little and just let them bake a year or two. Solberg said if you stress the hosta you stress the nem. They look bad but never lost one. Then the 3rd spring if they don't show signs I put them, still in pots, out under a tree away from the nem free plants. They can grow and be pretty but I don't trust them enough to put back in regular beds. I have been hoping someone would eventually come up with something that will really work. MAYBE this is it! Sorry about your plant...nems are the pits......See MoreBlue Mammoth vs Sum and Substance
Comments (5)I wouldn't worry about the Sum and Substance it will grow quickly. I don't have Blue Mammoth but my Elegans grow slower than the S&Ss that I have, but they get big after time. As to the question of planting under trees, it depends on the type of trees. Maples are tough, but the Elegans in my picture are right against a big maple tree. I plant under White Pines and never have any problem. I have Hickory and the hosta love it there. Unless you are still having freezing temps at night I would harden off the hosta by keeping them out if it is say 40 or so and get them into the ground when threat of frost has passed. They will do better in the ground. If we knew your location we could give better advice. Pictures of the area would help as well. Welcome to the group You will find good advice here and especially valuable advice from those who share a similar climate and conditions. Jon...See Moreindianagardengirl
