Design Dilemma Kitchens

Prefinished hardwood floor out of stock

I am moving and reconfiguring my kitchen island. I will have a 4' wide by 8' rectangular gap where the floor needs to be replaced. I have a pre-finished hardwood that is no longer produced. How do I fix the floor? Tile? It would be mostly under a countertop and be the place where barstools sit. Redoing all the hardwood would be pretty expensive since it's most of the first floor and the prefinished coating is holding up great. It looks new 16 years later.

You could do some online sleuthing and see if you can find some of the leftover flooring depending on how old it is - or if it were me I would see if I could find someone who could patch in some hardwood and stain to closely match the original (I would not do a tile patch) Personally I would not move the island until I had a good answer for the floor issue

Find a real hardwood floor re-finisher/installer. When we lived in LA we used one that was the third generation running the business and knew what he was doing. Someone like that will be able to do a patch that blends in with your current floors. Find that person first!

I think the misinformation was about screening and recoating a site finished and doing a board replacement. On site finished if you have a problem its much harder to do a single board replacement and have it blend. Most times you would have to resand the entrire floor to make it look good. With factory fiished a single board could be replaced without resanding adjoining areas. Either could be screened and recoated without sanding. Comments about factory finishes scratching are sometimes due to the fact that with multi coat products the almunium oxide is left off the top coat. It tends to look milky and the idea is to make the top coat easy to repair when scratches occur so its often pure urethane with the AO below the top coat.

They are a 1.5" finish nail with a small head on them. Countersunk below the surface around 1/16 on average (depending on my anger at the time and soreness of back and knees). I will get some shots tonight.

When it comes to building 'law' (you would need to look it up in your state/municipality) it the rule of thumb is: "You must allow the original contractor ONE attempt to fix his/her mistake. After that you are ALLOWED to find another professional to repair it at the ORIGINAL GC's expense." If you want some sort of compensation (ie. a free repair) then you need to allow installer #1 the first kick at the can. After that you are allowed to bring in someone else...at #1's expense. The TRICK is...to get guy #1 to pay for guy #2. This is where you WRITE IT INTO the repair contract. If #1 does NOT achieve and acceptable repair, then S/HE MUST pay for the cost to bring in another pro to finish the job. That statement gives you rights that a court will accept. As I asked before, do you have 100 EXTRA PLANKS?

The shipped product looks great with the wall color. The sample isn't as complimentary to my eye. I understand that it's not what you expected, but it does look really good. My concern is that you were shorted over 5%. That makes no sense at all unless you provided the raw material and were advised that there would be waste in the finishing process. Did you provide the raw material? If not, who did you place the order with, SYP or Premier? Did SYP select Premier as their subcontractor to do the finishing? Seems somebody owes you 5% back or 5% more product. If you're lucky, there was a 10% planned overage in the order and it will all work out, assuming you keep the entire order. So sorry your excitement turned to disappointment but it will all work out n the end. Remodeling is definitely an endurance sport.

Agree with chispa - find an expert hardwood person. We removed the fireplace and wall from between our kitchen and living room. Also moved a staircase. Hardwood guy patched the 30 year old hardwood with new hardwood, and stained it to match the existing 30 year old hardwoods. You have to look really, really closely to determine that its not all original.
