Veitchia merrillii...??
Comments (9)Veitchia merrillii is the botanical name of the Manilla palm, the Adonidia, and the Christmas Palm. They are all the same, just different common names. It's a builder's palm throughout Palm Beach County; we must have 500 of them in our community alone. Nice palm until they hit around 15' and then they tend to look a bit stringy. The nicest ones are planted as multiples - 3's, 5's, even 7's. They are highly susceptible to lethal yellows, although I've never seen one die from it in eleven years. Feed them well for best color and give them sufficient irrigation....See MoreHAVE: Christmas palms 'Veitchia' (Adonidia merrillii).

Comments (14)I have definitely noticed that when Christmas palms are available around here, they are really big (not sure why). I purchased a planting of three smaller ones on ebay (doing well at about 3 feet or so). A second larger planting (at 4.5 feet), I found standing amid a HD forest of Majesty palms--I grabbed it! HD being what it is, I was advised by the checkout clerk NOT to buy it because the tips were shedded off. Apparently thinking that this normal feature of the plant was the work of pair of scissors--I just smiled and said thank you. P.S.: In the past I have really had trouble overwintering this particular species. Taking the advice of a board poster, I planted mine in a very sandy soil (excellent drainage) and I watch never to really let them dry out. (These can start browning quickly without giving too many signs of drought.)--So far they are doing great and growing actively!...See MoreIndoor Christmas Palms( Adonidia merrillii:) Should I repot?
Comments (9)The palms grew faster last year( coming from Florida and being outside during the summer). Now, it takes almost a year for one new frond to unfurl! I suppose they have adjusted to the indoor light. They seem crowded in that small nursery pot, so I do plan to transplant up in the slightly larger pot…and then never again…because it is too large to handle. What is the best time to transplant?...See Moreescolat
