Seeded glass variation or defect? Black streaks & spots

My new cabinets arrived today and I'm disappointed with the look of the seeded glass. The bubbles aren't clear as expected. There are many black dots and streaks, which make the glass look dirty. I've never seen this look before. Is this a "charming" (huh!) characteristic or a defect?

I went to check my seeded glass, wondering if it had black bubbles that I'd missed. Nope. All clear.

I'm commenting to bump your post in hopes that some pros will join in.

It might not even look awesome after you mop. I physically shuddered when I looked at that inspiration floor. I'm betting the only time that floor looked like that was for that photo. Grease and food stains in a kitchen are one thing, but in a bathroom - well, you want to hope that's hair product or water, but... If this was a powder room that was used only occasionally, maybe, but teenagers? You are a brave woman. Otoh, you COULD use it as a disciplinary tool - listen to me, or else I'll make you clean all the spots off of your bathroom floor.... Could you pick up a couple of sheets of the tile and "dirty" them up a little? See how much it bothers you?

jackson2348- Check out real Vermont/NY slate, it comes in black, gray, green, red (no movement, solid color) and a purple/green/gray mottled version. Is is naturally a matte finish, and does not snow fingerprints or oil rings and does not stain. It does, however, slightly surface scratch from very hard things like knives or stainless utensils, but as it's the same color throughout, the scratches are not really visible. If you are super anal and can't stand the thought of seeing a tiny scratch, slate isn't for you. If, however, you don't want to have to seal your stone, worry about staining, oil rings or maintaining a shiny finish, you may want to consider Vermont/NY slate, not slate from Brazil, India or anywhere else, they don't have the same properties as the VT/NY mined stuff. There are many mines in that area that sell directly to the public, just Google "Vermont/NY slate", or a large stoneyard or tile dealer in your area might have access to samples. We have some sap wood and color variation in our natural cherry cabinets - the amount of sap wood (very pale colored) is pretty small. I think the color variation adds interest and texture and it doesn't bother me but I wouldn't want much more of the sap wood than we have. This picture was taken when the cabinets are about 6 years old and you can see the sap wood in the upper left of the right panel on the island and a bit on the bottom right drawer. The non-sap wood cherry has darkened but the sap wood stays very light: http://s113.beta.photobucket.com/user/cloud_swift/media/familyroom/fireplace-and-floor/IMG_0698-1.jpg.html?sort=3&o=0 The light area on the drawer over the door in your first picture doesn't seem quite as light as the sap wood in our cabinets so that may be just a lighter piece of non-sap wood that will darken with the rest of your cherry. Here is a closer look at the color variations in our drawer stack (taken when they were a few months old): Here are our family room cabinets - they have less variation, perhaps more select cherry - but I think we paid for it in the cabinet price. I think both looks are beautiful. The greater variation may age a bit better in a high use area like a kitchen - the more uniform, the more any little damage will show.

Nice pic, Sherry! I think I have the same type of fennel that you have. It's not totally bronze but there is some bronze on parts of the plant. It has been coming up every year for at least the past five years. I love the smell of it, and we have black swallowtails lay on it here. They've laid/ovisposited on that this year and on the parsley and the rue. I had taken out the rue a few years ago because I was allergic to it, but then I had some rue plants come up later and somehow I couldn't bring myself to rip them out. So now I have rue again. Now my daughter gets cats off the rue and brings in rue cuttings for the BST and GST cats so I don't have to touch it. She has mostly taken over doing almost all of the butterfly raising. I'm still confused about what kind of fennel this is at our place but I call it bronze fennel. All I know is that if I don't deadhead it each year, I would end up with lots of fennel plants coming up the following spring. I have mine in pretty much shade and that seems to work well to keep it from konking out earlier than I want it to. I like the plant but because the rue has more substantial foliage than the fennel, we/she usually end up raising the blacks on the rue. I wanted to raise the giants on the wafer ash trees that I planted for them here, but that doesn't last long because those darn potato leaf hoppers decimate the leaves even before the middle of summer. They're unusable now for the past couple of months because of those pests. So the giants are raised on the rue, but it's no problem for me since DD raises them. The giants prefer to lay their eggs on the wafer ash though, so maybe it would be okay to raise them on it, I don't know. Those trees are really unsightly though. Did you take photos of the seeded glass sample cabinets when you ordered them? If what you received is different from the sample cabinets, you may have recourse. Did you stop installation? Were you there to inspect the cabinetry when it was delivered?
A good part of the buyer’s responsibility is to verify that you received what you ordered.
The glass you show would be unacceptable to me. I’m sure that replacing the ugly glass will be time-consuming, but if what you received doesn’t look like the samples, the company should replace the glass.

I agree that you are not being picky and (unfortunately) are going to have to try get it replaced - so sorry that happened, how frustrating!

That glass is defective. The seeded drop may be a bit opaque but should be clear for the most part. Surprised they did not notice when cutting the glass.

Phew, thank you all for the sanity check! I was afraid I was being a psycho perfectionist. The cabinets were delivered yesterday and this one is sitting on my couch. I'll be checking the others in a sec.

Cabinet quality is a real problem right now. My newly-installed Kemper cabinets w/Storm stain were poorly finished. All doors and drawer fronts are being replaced. I was worried about the painted Schrock cabinets (same manufacturer), but so far the finish is good other than a hastily painted ding that won't be seen. I sure never expected an issue with the glass, though!

I have seen seedy glass looking similar to that in the past, but that doesn't make it acceptable. As others pointed out, the bubbles may be opaque but should not look black, That appears to be some sort of batch contamination.

Is the glass held in by clips on the inside of the cabinet door? If clips replacement should be easy and fast.

Probably a lower quality product due to sourcing from lesser quality vendors and/or being produced with lower quality raw materials. Common issues during the covid era.

Yep, should either be glaziers push points or possible a little plastic half-turn button if memory serves me.

I'm with the majority here: I love seeded glass, but this isn't what I picture when you say the term.

A second door had slightly less awful black marks, and a center cabinet with 2 glass doors says the glass has been back-ordered. Ha! Maybe I got the bad leftover stufd in the shop! I reached out to the kitchen store to let them know I need replacements.

Is it "in the glass" or is it something on the surface that can be cleaned? The seeded glass we show does not have any black on it. Sorry

The marks are in the glass, though some can be felt on the backside. Some feel like scratches but I can't clean anything out of those area. Fortunately, the glass IS nicely installed and easy to remove, which will be helpful.

@Charlene Smith-Fadden, funny you posted the cleaning observation. When I went to check my glass after seeing your photo, I was horrified to see a black "seed". I reached out instinctively to touch it and took the spot off with my finger. I just washed the glass last week for my book club meeting, I swear. You can feel the texture of the glass seeds, but they normally stay put!
