Comments (38)silversword, I checked out those links you provided. All provide erroneous information (in contradiction to accurate and reliable info provided by the Mayo Clinic). Two of your links go to supplement dealers' websites. Getting advice from them is like getting drug advice from a pharmaceutical company's site. Two articles are on general purpose sites, one written by an "ehow member", neither author apparently having any medical training. The other is an anonymous article on a cooking site. This illustrates the hazards of getting medical advice from the Internet. There are a slew of websites and articles promoting all kinds of products and treatments, by people with various levels of experience and training (or none at all) and with potential axes to grind that are not in accord with readers' best interesta. "Anyone who would take anyone's advice, including yours, without consulting someone who was qualified to give them personalized care would be foolhardy." I absolutely agree, and have said so on numerous occasions here (I have not given personal advice, but linked to a couple of reliable sites, one of which you also chose to reference). People are best off when they see the advice of a qualified physician or other practitioner that they trust, or go to websites that are known for providing reliable information. Here are numerous sources from a thread I started awhile back on good herbalism websites....See MoreSo dissapointed...what is ailing my blooming AV NOW?....
Comments (13)I really didn't think air circulation would be a problem because the plant is not crowded on that stand The whole pot by it's self is the environment Micro environment Your statement is true for the stand area but not as true for the inside of the container to the bottom row of leaves. Rest assured powdery mildew doesn't need a lot of room to develop and it can spread faster than a plant can breath the better air that your trying to give it. First thing I would do is loose the humidity trays move the plant to an area where PM wouldn't be able to effect other plants AKA Isolation. Next I'd also remove every effected leaf and toss them outside somewhere. After that I'd speak firmly to the plant and say YOU better start behaving. Explained below: Not sure if organic K-Neem is effective for AV's with PM already but would be helpful if used as a preventive measure of PM. Powdery Mildew if you haven't already read about it ... It develops mainly as a result of humidity chances that a plant cant adapt to as fast as the sudden high to low or low to high humidity changes occurring. A personal IMO for Begonia: I think it's better to try to grow the same plant a second time again. It could be better to try try again than over applying to much effort on that one single plant. Some of us have been there & done that. In return we learn more from our failures than our success....See MoreBlackspot: organic prevention and remedies.
Comments (36)I'm organizing the info. for future reference ***** Yes to black-peat humus as topping to buffer acidic rain, plus NPK of at least 10-10-10 for pots. Tested black-peat-humus plus horse manure (both alkaline) in 2011 for roses in the ground (clean past Nov), plus black-peat-humus potting soil (mixed with alkaline sand) for roses in pot in 2015 (Perle and Cloudert Soupert, both healthy until snow). Humus can hold the equivalent of 80–90% of its weight in moisture, and therefore increases the soil's capacity to withstand drought conditions.[32][33]The biochemical structure of humus enables it to moderate – or buffer – excessive acid or alkaline soil conditions.[34]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humus Above pic. is Perle d' Or, own-root in a pot with snow, winterized in my dark & unheated garage. Pic. taken the day before Thanksgiving, Nov. 25, 2015. It's 100% healthy, no pests, no diseases. Things I did right this year: Own-root from a tiny-rooting is wimpy & small. So put a 4" layer of soil mixed with alfalfa pellets ON TOP. That for constant release of nutrients, plus to lock in moisture. This was wet year. To buffer acidic rain, I put 1/4 cup of pea-gravel, for slow-release of calcium & magnesium & trace elements. Advantages: Pea gravel magnifies the fragrance. Pea-gravel scatters out and doesn't block out rain like big-chunk red-lava rock. Pea gravel is alkaline, so it neutralizes acidic rain. It rained so much I didn't bother with SOLUBLE fertilizer. I followed U. of Kentucky success with Omega 6-6-6 (blood meal, bone meal, sulfate of potash). I put high-bone meal fertilizer NPK 4-10-7 in the potting mix. Also topped with 1/2 tablespoon sulfate of potash, 1 tablespoon gypsum, and 2 tablespoon blood meal. This lasted for 2 weeks of constant rain....See MoreHow do I get the dark brown patina back on my copper sink!
Comments (5)I guess that's the risk you take when you install a sink made of a soft, finicky material with a fake finish. Bet it cost a mint, too. :-( That sink really isn't any more functional than the overpriced "stainless steel" refrigerators that are just plain carbon steel coated with a phony stainless-look finish, and the same cheap disposable imported guts inside. If you want it to end up with a normal patina, first you're going to have to scrub the rest of the factory finish off, getting up to the edge and right down into that texture. You'll probably also want to polish it to remove the coarse grit scratches that the BKF left behind. I'd probably try fine buffing compound, the stuff auto detailers use, from a pro auto finish jobber. Stay away from the big name auto cleaners at the chain parts stores, they usually contain silicones or other shine-up residues, and you don't want those. I might also try progressively finer steel wool. Steel's harder than copper. Then just let time and hand washing have their way with it. Clean it with a mild non-abrasive cleaner when the soap scum builds up. That's a bunch of work, though. If it were my house, I'd tear out that bit of conspicuous consumption, and put in a nice normal porcelain-on-steel vanity sink. That would nuke the problem, and make cleaning just about foolproof to boot. Hey, copper's going for around $2 a pound at the scrap yards these days, so you could even get a little of your investment back. :-)...See Morejally
