Shade Tolerance: Renae vs. Veilchenblau?
Comments (6)Diane, I grew Veilchenblau at my last residence in a pretty darn shady spot. She performed admirably! She never received direct sunlight, she had to stretch to the top of a deck to escape the shadowy underworld of a north-facing location, and she was planted in (smashed into) a poorly amended, narrow space between the concrete foundation of the deck and a pathway. Tough, tolerant, gorgeous, thornless (or nearly?) rose with a light, sweet fragrance. Close to zero disease. Easily maintained with pruning after bloom. Highly recommend her! Comments (9)Hi Wintercat: I'm glad you are back ... should I post the romantic novel using roses name in caps. that you, Dove_song, I, and others wrote? Should I post that in the English Roses Forum, so international folks can enjoy our stylish writings? Violetta is one of the pretty sisters in the novel. Here's the part you wrote, which is the best part of the novel. It gives me a good laugh every time I read it. "â¢Posted by WinterCat z10 (My Page) on Mon, Jul 30, 12 at 6:16 AUNT SALLY was wearing her GRANDMOTHER'S HAT - not that it made her LOOK BETTER... FEEL GOOD, and if that weren't enough, she was suddenly gripped by a BURNING DESIRE for SUGAR COOKIEs and COFFEE TEA, so she ended up having a BURNING GLOW in her stomach, but she just couldn't stop popping 'em into her mouth. She tried sniffing PEPPERMINT because she remembered STRAWBERRY HILL said PEPPERMINT takes away one's appetite, but it didn't work. So she started rooting frantically in her handbag for a couple of ASPIRIN. GOOD GOLLY! She howled. No ASPIRIN! Oh! HELP THE AGED! Call DR HUEY! Not a MOMENT IN TIME had passed and DR HUEY's QUICKSTEP was heard. HELLO GORGEOUS! cried DR HUEY. So it's YOU 'N' ME again! YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE! FEAR NAUGHT my DARLING! You've never been a SHOW STOPPER but I always miss a HEARTBEAT when I behold your FUNNY FACE!...See MoreWanted: Cutting or rooted Veilchenblau
Comments (3)I looked up both of them! The blue perenniel seems the more bluey looking of the two. Do they have a smell? Which is nicer smelling?? Thanks!!...See MorePeggy Marti and Veilchenblau
Comments (12)Wow, Fruitcat, what a wonderful combination! It’s very striking. I’m always a little unsure about combining colors in my garden, so I find this very helpful. I tend to always stick to my “safe colors”, and I’ve decided that I need to branch out a bit. I like the darker mauve of V with PM’s pink. I don’t grow either rose, but I certainly have plenty pink roses, and I think I’ll copy your color combo. I think I actually have a clematis that’s dark mauve like that. I better do a bit of “shopping” from my pot ghetto! I need to add some “pop” to all my pastels. You’ve shown me how beautiful these two look together, just lovely! Thanks for giving me the confidence to do it. For some reason I had it in my mind that Peggy Martin had smaller blooms. They don’t look to be very small in your picture. I’m unlikely to grow either of these roses, so it’s wonderful to see them. Veilchenblau, in particular, has always held a fascination for me. Unfortunately my yard is too small for a large once blooming rose. Peggy Martin sounds like she grows enormous, and doesn’t appreciate being “told” to grow otherwise, so she won’t be be coming to live here either. One monster is enough for me! (My beautiful monster is Mel’s Heritage, and he’s HUGE.) Alana, my what an abundance of buds your V has! What a wonderful sight. No wonder Spring is your favorite time of year! Somehow, I didn’t realize just how many amazing roses you actually grow. Boy, what I would give to wander through your garden! (Gently, of course:) It’s neat to see how different the two Veilchenblau's look. Both are lovely, and you really make me wish I had the space and water to grow it. That’s the case with so many roses I’m tempted to add. If only I had more space, water, and energy....sigh. So thankful for your photos. I’m enjoying them very much!
