Help with New Floor

last year

I am looking to update the dated tile in my house. I have lived here for two years and cannot stand to look at it anymore. The issue is, I am having a difficult time matching new floor to my oak kitchen and gray/blue main living area. The cabinets are in great condition and I am not looking to update them anytime soon. Attached is a picture of the current floors and what I’m thinking of going with. Does this clash? Or what would you suggest?

Please do not do gray floors. You will not be able stand them in a few years when they are passe. What about hardwood floors throughout? They come prefinished, also.

Vinyl flooring has come a long way in 30 years. You don't say how long you will be in that house, but it doesn't sound like it will be for long. In that case, you could look at a medium-priced vinyl sheet floor or vinyl tile. If you're paying for installation, you might want to use tile, because that is a DIY project almost no matter the room size while cutting 12-foot widths of sheet vinyl around corners and seaming it properly requires knowledge and talent. Vinyl flooring does require a significant amount of prep, which equals labor, but it is a comfortable, water-resistant surface and does not require an especially rigid subfloor like ceramic or stone. You also could look at VCT -- vinyl composite tile. It's tough as nails and cheap, but some folks don't like the look -- reminds them too much of old schoolrooms or hospitals. :-( Depending on how much flooring you need, you might be able to find some remnant linoleum planks or tiles. Some people even consider laminate (that is rated for use in a kitchen), though I'm not a fan of it personally.

Wow what a lovely plan. You must be very excited. Must the entire house be done all at once? I believe everyone who has done a minor update in their home (half bath ) to a giant full home renovation has to go through the dreaded Want vs Need list. Each person or corporation doing a renovation must figure out their budget and what they want to spend on their project.. Some people have unlimited funds but even those folks put together a plan. Do you have a General contractor or is your architect doing both? Sometimes a GC can really help control costs and help control the scope of a project and stay within budget. With that said, is your scope itemized or listed in sections per price? Your contractor/architect could probably help you figure out how to trim costs and to even do things in sections. What has your architect suggested? I would go through your list of wants vs needs and see which falls into place. Sometimes it is about deciding the structure (basement) of the house is more of a need while the La Cornue Grand Palais range is more of a want. I wonder if filling in the basement might end up being the cheaper option in the end? With a smaller basement you could make your entire project smaller. So much to think about but I am sure you can do it! You are on your way to making your dream home a reality.

Those "gaps" are mild. They are normal. They are expected. They tell the story that they are original. They are meant to be there. The new floors will eventually do that too...which means they will match (eventually). It might take a decade...but it will happen. And don't forget that once everything is sanded down, you will be VERY surprised at how those "gaps" seem to go away (visually). Why, you ask? Because some of that is dirt. Once the floor has been sanded down (1-2mm of wood is taken off with the sanding), the dark material between the planks gets shaved off as well. And voila...they look cleaner (because they are). Relax about the absolutely normal spacing between planks. Unless you have museum quality climate control, this LITTLE bit of shrinkage is normal and to be expected with every floor (especially if it is 30 years old).

Hesitant about the gray being too trendy as well, but also don’t want too much of the same honey oak. What about this?

try wood tones.....how about a lighter/pale oak. I dont find the gray to work very well w the oak and dont care for them on their own merits. if you want gray I'd go darker into a slate looking plank.

The grey is great for rest of house but not with the kitchen oak. Wood tones that have a bit of the orange oak tone with some lighter shades mixed in. Not a solid color, more variations if that makes sense

We just finished a LVP install with Elegance Plyquet. Nordea. The house has similar cabinets and trim works. Hope these pictures can help you visualize better.

The problem is that youre trying to create little individual vignettes rather than treating the home like a whole piece of cloth. The problem is the cold blue. Not the tile, or the oak.

I can tell from her posted pictures. Emily likes greyish floor design to make her space more updated, IMO, the floor in clean grade natural white oak will look stunning. How do you like this one here?

That's one of our Tigerwood projects from long time ago. Tigerwood does go well with golden oak. Be prepared that it will turn more reddish with time though.
