Comments (4)'Quits surging for the most part when I'm actually mowing grass,' What it does when not cutting grass is technically not of any concern. Specifically, it is running as-designed. The later 2-cycles were forced to run leaner than they should because of emissions laws, so they surge without a load on the engine. When the engine starts to slow because it's cutting, the reduced speed allows the spring-loaded air vane to move, opening the throttle. Still, you might try increasing governor spring tension to pick up a few RPM which sometimes smooths out the surging and makes it go into 'power mode' (smooth hum) sooner. Find the white plastic wheel with knurled rim at the base of the air vane on top of the carb. Turn the wheel 4 clicks clockwise and see how that works. It is not possible to adjust it enough to over-speed. In fact, as long as the mulch fan and blade are attached, you can manually push the air vane all the way over to wide-open throttle and hold it there. It can only run up so far until the horsepower requirements of the two 'fans' meets the max power of the engine, probably 4000 RPM or so. Too fast to use for mowing, but much slower than the engine can potentially run....See MorePaulinCT 2008 renovation status
Comments (13)Hi vkolte01, that photo is deceiving, my lawn is not weed free, just mostly "broadleaf challenged" right now. There is a ton of Poa, it is just not very prominent because that photo was taken just after a mowing, and the harsh sunlight that makes the grass look light apparently also masks the Poa. There are also some grassy weeds here and there, but not too many, mostly thanks to Dimension I think. I did have a major amount of broadleafs, but got rid of many of them by spot spraying WBG about a month ago, and following up with the dreaded Weed and Feed (what I had leftover from last year). Both products seemed to work very well, which was a surprise to me given all I have read about the difficulties of early spring weed control, and the inefficiencies of W&F products. I personally hope that after my grass fills in I won't be tempted to buy another W&F product, and I do think that will work out, but the fact is that, for whatever reason, weed and feed seemed to help me this year. FWIW it was a Lebanon Seaboard "Greenview" product....See MoreFungus? Grubs?
Comments (6)I'm in A^2, in Washtenaw, probably the least snowy county in the state. Even here, I've come to conclude that tall fescue is not a real good choice here, especially in situations where snow can linger. A few years ago I took pictures of the awful snow mold on my tall fescue, with untouched perennial rye adjacent, and sent them to a turfgrass scientist at MSU. He now uses those photos in his presentations! And as you've found out, tall fescue and perennial rye need a lot of mowing in the spring. You're doing the right thing cutting a little shorter going into winter and removing debris--not much more you can do, short of preventative fungicide treatments like the golf course guys use. I don't think that is something homeowners should get into. Kentucky bluegrass is the ticket for all but really shady lawns. It is not nearly as susceptible to gray snow mold as tall fescue, and it recovers from drought, diseases, and wear quite well. A.J....See MoreFertilizing after overseeding - organically
Comments (1)Whether or not your soil would need another application of fertilizer depends on what the nutrient level in your soil is. Most all turfgrasses need 2 pounds of Nitrogen per 1,000 square feet annually and if you plunk down the right stuff that lawn only needs a feeding once each year, in October is fine. So if you have put that amount of N into the turf there is no need to put more, which can create problems and add to the pollution that we have. If you have not done so for some time contact your local office of the Rutgers USDA Cooperative Extension Service and ask about having a good, reliable soil test done to see if yoru soil needs more "fertilizer".
