Comments (6)Hi Rhome, You're right I'm not worried about resale but I would still like it to be nicely designed. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I don't want to spend all this money and then have something stick out like an obvious amateurish move, if there's another better way to design it that will still function and look nice. And I totally take your point re. the pot handle clearances and nowhere to rest a spoon, if the stove is against a side wall. That would have been a rookie move so thanks for the feedback -- you saved me from designing the antithesis of elegance. :-) I guess it's the 48" stove for us then. Not sure why I don't totally love that yet but maybe I just need to find a more understated hood than what's in the mockup, to tone down the look a bit... I think the ovens will be okay. I just tried unloading a pretend turkey while standing behind my dishwasher and that worked well anyway ... there's room enough, but I do wish real-life turkeys were so light, lol! You asked about dish storage. That is somewhat problematic. I'll store dishes, mugs, and most glasses in the 39" upper to the left of the pantry on the fridge wall. It's a fair haul from the dishwasher but I'm used to it now as it's the same in the builder design we've been living with for a year. It has its pluses too though: close to seating for setting the table, and will be at the beverage and snack area so my husband won't need to get into my space when he's making a snack or having a drink. At least I'll have my pots and pans and cooking utensils close to the cleanup zone, so maybe the walking will somewhat even out. :) You also mentioned lack of zone separation as a potential issue. I'm curious about that since I've been reading about zones on gardenweb with much interest over the past months. I confess I thought I'd done okay with it in this layout though (other than the dish storage thing). I figured that since the cleanup zone (left sink and left side of island) was separate from the prep zone (right sink and right side of island), across from the cooking zone (back wall with range and pot/pan/cooking utensil storage), with a separate food storage zone (fridge and flanking pantries), and separate beverage and snacking zone (coffee, sink, bread drawer, snack making surface), that I was home free. Wrong? I know I have no right to ask for more of your help -- you've been so helpful already! -- but if you could, can you suggest which zones I'm missing and are there tweaks or more serious changes I should consider to make the flow better? Comments (10)Gerberdaisy- There are a number of "Carrara Looking" marbles as well as the real deal from Carrara Italy... here in the US Danby Mrble has been used for centuries and is all over the country, with it's predominant use being in the Eastern US and of course, the NorthEast. Polished marble WILL show the effects of use and exposure to substances that will attack the polish - ie; acids & alaklais - after an initial "break-in" period (and this can vary by the amount of use/abuse that the tops receive, the marble will develope a patina with all of the scratches, stains crazing and other wear marks that will accumulate over the years. I think this is what Mark Gamble was writing about when he said that: "You want to be careful with Carrera in a kitchen setting. It will etch from many fruit juices and higher ph content cleaners." This is a valid statement - as many people will "assume" that the polished marble will always stay that way no matter how much use/abuse it gets.... I think all that Mark was trying to say was - know what you are getting, what the product CAN and CAN'T do...that's all. He and I are on the same wave length on the attributes of using Granite in a kitchen environment - Granite would be MY first choice too... I am a professional, and have been doing slab work since 1985, and as far as I am concerned, I would not use Carrara in MY kitchen - BUT... THAT is just MY own personal taste.. Have white fridge, two years old. -- Goals ordered sequentially 1st: New heat in floor. Concrete slab. Sheet Membrane over slab, to help heat retention (more in tiles, less into concrete). Pipes/Cables, thinset, porcelain PEI 5 quality. Frugal, sensible, high quality, lower cost of operation with a membrane between concrete and cables. Comments (479)@tapattee Whirlpool told me their poorly reviewed combo (released last year) was not on display! I walked the booth and did not see it either... maybe because they told me it was not there. Please post a picture of it. You got lucky spotting any hidden induction. I searched for it with the help of guest services. I even went back today looking. I love the concept and want it so badly but if the big boys are steering clear then its not ready for the masses...that's the way I look at it. LG was on it with the challenge to the GE combo... making it slightly larger, 9 inches shorter and the Frig that changes colors was a slightly better Samsung. The GE combo definitely has a condenser with a 5 year warranty. "Five years From the date of the original purchase. The sealed heat pump drying system (compressor, condenser, evaporator and all connecting tubing) which fails due to a defect in materials or workmanship. During this additional four-year limited warranty, you will be responsible for any labor and related service costs." The condenser is 1/3 the size of the GE and not drying effectively. I'm refusing delivery on it tomorrow. So disappointed! I guess a dark counter with a Miele induction isn't so bad.
