My parents house is like that, but there’s a wall with a wide doorway into the area with the vanity, so it’s open but also easy to close off by just putting a curtain rail up. It’s also oriented to the room such that if you only use enough light at the vanity to wash your hands for a midnight potty run, it really isn’t enough to bother someone in the bed if you place the bed sensibly. Getting ready in the morning would be trickier if you needed to do makeup and so on so needed proper lighting, so that’s where a screen or a curtain would come in.

I know it's like heresy to say this around here, but I'm going to anyway: comfort rules over everything else! Fully agree with your decision to go with round. If you want to keep the look modern, there are quite a few round knobs that can maintain that look for you. You could also look at some round glass knobs that might compliment everything nicely and not have to worry about coordinating the finishes. Something like: And if you care to post pictures of the faucet, vanity and knobs you are considering, there are tons of talented folks who can give you some feedback. Another vote for preformed showers not being in anyway perfect. I just ripped out a few and considered switching to tub and tile. The issue with ours is that they had foam for stabilization of the floor. Foam deteriorates and then the floor cracked. Mortar much better but just a reminder that one piece are not infallible. I have a 7 yo boy who has grown up in a tile and tub. The bathtub tile is not an issue. The grout around the toilet is a bit of one. But a big deal - no. I know things are regional but I haven't seen sheet vinyl used in a new home in a long time let alone a custom home. We built a super cheap rental house that has tile floors - but one piece showers. Vinyl rips, shrinks, burns, stains. If you have never had old vinyl, you need to look at some. Tile is pretty durable. Just to give you an idea of what this house is like - vinyl siding, vinyl windows, thermafoil cabinets, no crown etc. Interestingly, the worst cheap out we did was the showers and I wish we did better tubs and tile.

If you're redoing the shower anyway (looks like tile and grout are degraded and may not be keeping moisture out of the wall), then a tub is pretty cheap, and you might be glad you replaced it rather than having to build your whole bathroom around the current shade of gray. Plus, it may look even worse once the rest of the room is fresh and new.
