SW Accessible Beige for wainscoting & built-ins?

We're interested in painting the wainscoting and built-ins in our new home but I think it could look too stark to paint them white, along with the high white walls and cathedral ceilings. We would normally paint the upper portion of the wall and do white waitscot but we don't want to deal with the cost and labor of painting with cathedral ceilings, especially since it was recently painted. I'm considering SW Agreeable Beige for wainscot and built-ins, or another neutral. We may end up painting the brick fireplace, so color choice shouldn't be dicated by the brick. Thoughts? We like a contemporary look but want warmth as well. (note - this is the house with staging, not our furniture)

If you show painted part with Agreeable beige, then it looks on my monito a little bit yellowish. Do you now which white used for the walls?

You can also go with warm off-whites.

I have to ask the sellers which white was used. I was thinking I might need a little more contrast for it to look right. I'm strongly considering Edgecomb Gray. The room gets a lot of natural light, btw

This is a difficult question because it all depends on personal taste. I would recommend finding inspiration photos from Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, etc. Check out www.houzz.com for inspiration as well. I personally would choose chocolate brown, black, and taupe with an accent color. I love slate blue for an accent color with brown/black/taupe (like a silvery blue-gray). This is what I've done in my current house and I love the way it looks. A friend used the same granite as you with similar floors. Her furniture was brown and black. Her area rugs were black/taupe/cream. Family photos had black frames on the walls. Then her accent color was red (red pillows, art with red in it, etc). It looked very pretty. HTH, Good luck!

@Jan Moyer, thanks for the etemology lesson! Closet size room: check. No window: check. Powder for my wig ... it’s here somewhere.... Re: the fan: do you have a preference on location (over the toilet?) and brand/size/capacity? I’m guessing I’ll need an overhead (canned) light, in addition to sconces. With the sun tube that ceiling may feel cluttered. Is that as issue? i already bought the sun tube and I like natural light. Should I still use it here (seems like a good idea to me) or move to that hallway or ? @J OBrien thanks for your comments. I love your home and that powder and laundry room too.(yes get the wine fridge lol) Great wallpaper. How wide is your powder room and your sink? Wall color - natural tan or accessible beige?

Totally understand the dilemma of trim that “came With the house” repainting trim is expensive If the color on the walls in the pic above the latte pic is natural tan, i don’t mind it. But I do see some green undertones in the natural tan swatch which is why it might be making your trim look yellowish. On the wall in that pic though i see what you mean by bluish dirty gray. I don’t dislike the color, but i see how it’s not what you were going for. By cut it, i mean make it 60%. Tell the Sherwin will people and they‘ll know exactly what you mean. Decreasing the darkness/depth will increase the light reflective value. Accessible beige at full “strength“ will be dark like the latte. You want half strength or 60% accessible beige. Show them the depth of natural tan and tell them you want accessible beige at that depth. they will know better than me what percentage will get you the same depth. They do it for me all of the time. They can make a little 4 dollar can for you to try. Also, off the top of my head, i think sherwin Williams worldly Gray might look nice. Try grab the Sample card of that while you’re in there. It’s a really really pretty color and the right depth.

The trouble with cutting formulas, is that you don’t know what you’re going to get until you’ve bought and paid for it. (Unless you’ve seen it done somewhere and liked it?) All the key attributes may alter, not just the one you are trying to change. Do you want a colour from a similar Hue Family location, the same quantity of Chroma (colourfulness), only lighter (higher Value)? Or do you want the new colour to be similar in, Hue Family location + lighter + more neutral? Here are some existing colours from the same Hue Family neighbourhood. They are all lighter than Accessible Beige - with similar quantities of colourfulness (Chroma). Except White Heron & Futon are also more neutral - (less Chroma) If the colours are still too ‘yellow’ for you then you are looking for colours with lower Chroma again. This is sw bagel and sw semi-gloss...white? Can's remember but it's a nice contrast. I had to close the shutters to get a decent picture.

That is a contemporary home. The wainscoting seems really misplaced. I would use the opportunity to remove it.

Definitely removing as @BeverlyFLADeziner suggests is the best way to go but you mentioned a budget concern, so if nothing else before you paint, remove that raised trim on it and try to replace what looks like an ogee trim transition piece with something with straight lines. Check prices for painting both the wall and ceiling vs. painting cabinets. Depending on your location, you might be surprised which is less expensive.

@BeverlyFLADeziner, wow, thanks for that visualization. I never would have thought of removing it but it does look better. I'll look at the trim piece when I go to the house today. Maybe it would actually be better to paint the wainscoting the same color white, if we don't have the budget to remove it. Labor is very expensive in our area, so we were thinking of painting it ourselves after the proper research.

I have Agreeable Beige throughout the home we just purchased, and my fear would be that it would look a bit "dirty" with the clean white. At times it loos beige, sometimes grey, sometimes green. So, I would either remove the wainscoting or paint it the same color as the walls.

I wouldn't paint the built-ins, unless you are doing the trim throughout the house. It adds a nice bit of warmth to the room and balances out the fireplace wall.

I agree with Beverly and Sammie J - the best thing to do is to remove the wainscott, but don't paint the built-ins. Or paint the wainscott the same color as the walls to make it blend in. I think Accessible Beige on it with the carpeting would cause beige overload. That's a technical term for too much beige. :-)

Love the advice, everyone. I definitely see what you all mean. I do like some wood tones with white walls, just not overload, so I think it will help to either remove the wainscoting or paint it the same as the walls.
