Paradise Found makes an entrance!

One of my very favorite smelling roses has fought its way through the shade for its first bloom of the year, and wowsers!
I usually only get a handful before summer heat sets in, so I'm definitely inhaling as much of its delicious scent as I can!

Carla - if you look at my rose avatar...that's Paradise Found!!!!! It died on me many years ago...and it's still my favorite rose...that and Chartreuse de Parme...which of course I killed as well. Isn't the fragrance fabulous!!! I really wish I still had it. :) :) I'm so happy that you have one and that your love it. :) :)

I'm with Beth on the question of Paradise. Sorry I have no experience personally with Paradise Found or Dick Clark, though I have been curious about the latter this fall. Funny how widely divergent people's experiences can be with the same rose varieties. Paradise is a terrific rose for me, whether grafted on Dr. Huey or growing on its own roots. Actually, it is one of the more vigorous 20th century hybrid teas for me on its own roots. Blooms its fool head off; medium height but veerry bushy. Blooms are biggest for me in the first flush of spring. In subsequent flushes it blooms several dozen at a time, and that might be why the blooms are then smaller. But it consistently has good hybrid tea bloom form. It is moderately fragrant. Interesting --some say bizarre--color combination. Its only negative for me has been a bigger-than-typical sensitivity to chemicals; it chemical burns easily. As long as I remember to water thoroughly a few hours before spraying or applying miracle gro, it seems to be alright. Someone mentioned Double Delight. That rose is similarly sensitive to chemicals, at least in my experience. Mike

Could be sun scorched. If it was in a green house it needs to be harden off a few hours at a time to the sun. Till it gets to the point it can take all day sun. That is what it will need to bloom well. :o)

Sorry for my poor layout skills, definitely not to scale, but hope this helps. We are on just under an acre, on top of a large hill in the woods. The property is long and narrow. The house is situated near the back of the property, so you have to drive up a long driveway. The front landscaping, the little green circles (technically the back of the house) has hostas and bleeding hearts, and the large green circles are proposed hydrangeas. Our landscaping is pretty much capped at plants for the front (along parking pad) that do well in morning light and then shade the rest of the day, or full shade plants. There are 6-8 parking spots on top of the hill. We have pathway lights, as well as a light by the entrance door, and all along the right side of the deck. We moved here about 3 years ago and I honestly have no idea what they were thinking when they built this deck. The yard is not level at all, and has a lot of dips and bumps, so a flat walkway won't work unless we either add stairs or regrade the area. Our plan is to eventually add a railing along the side that does not have it too, but that is not a priority.

Yes I didn't get to the tip of the South Island but the few days I had driving down about 1/3 of the western spine of it were some of the windiest I remember; it's different from the wind we get during non-tropical cyclonic weather because it's so sustained and unrelenting. This is apparently a feature of some maritimes climates more than others. Though the PNW has "Pineapple express" type storms once in a while, they are not known for being very windy for days on end. A friend of the family who moved to Seattle said it was the stillest place she'd ever lived...but she'd mostly lived before in the midwest and high plains, and if you look at this map, her observations are spot on for someone coming from that background: http://apps2.eere.energy.gov/wind/windexchange/windmaps/residential_scale.asp I imagine coastal South Island NZ and Cornwall would be an orange or even purple on the same scale. I can even vouch for the slight shadings you see: the Piedmont of the northeast has a windiness the south does not. If I drive up to Lancaster Co. on a summer day, it's typical that there's a slight breeze in the air that you wouldn't get in say, Richmond, VA, where I've spend some time in the summer.

Oh I am so jealous. What's wrong with my paradise found? It has been bothering me for a while. Once I thought maybe I got a wrong plant? But the bloom before the full open stage does look exactly as the photos I searched online. However once the bloom is fully open, the intense beautiful color is gone. It looks mauve instead of red. Then even worse, the edge of outer petals become brown, which gives it an old rusty look.

My Paradise Found looks just like yours when the blooms get older. I don't think there's anything wrong with it.

Thank you all for your nice words! If I had never seen Carla's photos, and also Ann9BNcalif's photos, I would think mine is doing OK, haha. I adore the beautiful comparison of intense red outer petals and pale light pink inner petals, but mine never looks like that even for one moment.

The other day I was about to shovel prune it, but was stopped by my daughter. She said she loves it. Then I guess I have to accept what it looks like and keep it in my garden.

Mine looks the same as yours as it ages, it just has the white/ burgundy contrast when it first opens.
