you can get rectangle window fans pretty cheaply at Walmart. They either have a reverse air flow switch, or you just turn them around. we use them in the evening to bring in the cool air. They work pretty well. You don't need a fancy one, about $20. (you can also blow the hot air OUT of one window and cool in thru another)

Hi wantoretire_did! Thank you so much for the suggestions! I've been meaning to get to HD and my local ACE for a walk-about. I'm going to go when I have a couple of hours and don't have to rush around. Just walk around with my trusty legal pad and take notes. Lighting is a big part of what I want to look at. I really appreciate your suggestion because that didn't even cross my mind! I'm pretty sure most, if not all, of the fixtures in my house are original, and at 37, they need to retire, lol! I just can't see paying some guy from CL for the rest of my life to come replace bulbs and wash the fixtures! I have electric burners, but I can see how that could easily happen with gas. I'm pretty much leaning against the ceiling fans now; cathyyg made very good points, and these seven ft. ceilings feel so low already, even at my height, that I fear the fans would just draw attention to them. We've got a good system with the fans now, and I don't think ceiling fans are as necessary as I thought they were when I first posted this. Yes! Taking lots of pictures! :-) I hope all is well with you and yours!

Wherever you put the fans I suggest setting the blades to pull cooler air up and distribute it to the walls where it will drop down. Forcing warmer air down is appropriate if the room is so warm that direct air movement on your skin is needed for comfort or the ceiling is very high.

Update: my installation of the second fan went very well, it works (with its own remote) very well. The intermittent status of the first one still exists, however. Here is the situation: yesterday, fan #1 was working fine (remote could control the fan and its light). I turned off the power and installed fan #2. The instructions from MinkeAire say that I need to change the communication frequency between the remote and the fan, by moving one dip switch within the remote (not clear that it was in the remote, but there are no switches in the receiver). To do that, I need to press "stop" on the remote within one minute of turning on the power and hold it for 10 seconds, which I did and it worked. So then, I had two fans with two remotes in the same room, on the same circuit. I left them both running for the evening as we were watching TV. Because the light bothered my wife, I tried to turn off the light on the fan near the TV, and it didn't respond. I tried the remote for the other fan and it worked fine. At the end of the evening, I turned off the power switch (which is my planned method of operation) and, of course, both stopped. This morning, I thought that maybe the first fan had "forgot" the communication, so I tried resetting it using MinkeAire's instructions. I did that, and now both fans work, but on the same remote. So now I have two problems: the fan's individual remotes don't control them separately and, perhaps, fan #1 may be still acting up. Because it's Independance Day, I assume neither the mfr. or dealer will be open to support calls, so I'm going to call one on Monday. Should I call the dealer (Hansen Wholesale Fans) or MinkeAire?
