Home Decorating Design Dilemma

wall panel at front entrance

My daughter just bought her first house! It is a very old house from the 20’s that was flipped. When you first walk in, there is a black wall panel to the left of the front door which is in the family room. Would love suggestions on how to design around it.

I think I would treat it the same as the wall if the bump out can’t be removed.

I have an entryway that is similar. I put a large mirror and I love it. I hated our entryway when we first moved in and have grown to like it as It runs half the length of the house and it makes our home feel more private. We can’t see any neighbors from the back of our house and thanks to the smart entryway design we can’t see any in the front either when in the main living areas. I did have a painting there before, the mirror helped me not feel as though I was walking straight into a wall. It helped the space look so much larger as the front door has glass and the mirror seemed to bounce that light around making everything seem larger.

A mirror facing a door that leads into the home isn't a good placement. And doesn't serve much purpose either. The good incoming chi is reflected back out the door instead of being able to circulate in the house. Although your mirror is somewhat covered up by the bench & pillow. I know it sounds ridiculous to a lot of people, but it is fun researching Feng Shui and is one of many interesting things I enjoy reading about. Research mirror placement on line. You can find out a lot about mirrors! I have a fun book titled Feng Shui for Dummies. I wonder if you could move the mirror to your 'art' wall, and put your art above the bench instead. It might change your luck. But who's superstitious!

I’m no pro, but I’d remove the wood strips on it. As Kate says, make it look like the other walls and add matching wainscoting. This looks like a “feature “ wall I saw in a recent HGTV show - how it was supposed to entice buyers. I’m not a fan, especially with the color. I’m guessing there’s something behind it that was ugly and/or needs to stay.

It's probably hiding something - maybe plumbing, but it is awfully large. Proceed cautiously if you go to remove it. Don't hack away at it - cut out a square of drywall so you can shine a flashlight inside to see if there is anything in there and put the drywall piece back if it is hiding something. It looks like the previous owners tried to make a feature out of it, but I think if it were painted the same as the rest of the wall it would disappear (somewhat), which would be better than emphasizing it. You could remove the faux wainscotting/ molding on the lower half of the wall if that doesn't suit your style. Since this is the family room, is this the right location for the TV?

How about this idea? Remove the wood strips and apply a mural.

I’m pretty sure there is a fireplace under it that is non-functioning.
Owner is the general contractor so my daughter will check.

Inspector said there was no concern. It covers the fireplace/chimney. A lot of the houses cover it with drywall or paneling. It’s a decorative choice.kandrewspa- yes, it’s where tv could go in the open family room.

Take the decorative trim off of it, then add molding and paint similar to adjacent walls.

Or, again remove the accent molding. Add built in shelving on the sides, and fake doors on the lower part of the bump-out, and a large piece of artwork on the top. It will make it look like it is meant to be there.
