Renee, I agree with most people on here, especially about Roses Unlimited and Antique Rose Emporium. I had a 50+ rose garden in a limited space in Florida (high humidity), and grew a few Austins. They took a lot of care: regular spraying, well spaced apart, and lots of air flow. The blackspot battle during the worst of the humidity was a pain, but the scent of those roses was so well worth it. Belinda's Dream bought from Roses Unlimited was the spectacular show off in the garden, yielding over 300+ blooms for months and months in a row. It had a 10 month season, and smelled like cotton candy. I also recommend Outta the Blue, which had a black pepper/rose scent that I planted right at the edge of the walkway at the driveway. Tamora, Sharifa Asma, Fair Bianca, and other Austins whose names escape me now, were amazing! Pat at Roses Unlimited knew exactly which roses to recommend to me for my microclimate, so make sure to speak with her if you want the best and most successful roses. The Austins were NOT carefree, but I knew that before I bought them. I also had hybrid teas; lots of them, and again, Pat helped me select the least fussy ones. I mixed herbs, veggies, perennials and a few annuals among the garden, and lots of glass oddities. It was beautiful! Remember: did a million dollar hole, and that's half the battle.

I like White Swan too. Tall, reliable and beautiful, unless the voles get to it - mine are recovering from near vole decimation 2 years ago. Also have a bunch of 'Primadonna White' seedlings, that are in their 3rd season. They didn't bloom the first year, were transplanted last year so it wasn't much of a show, but I'm so excited to see how they do this year along with the Pow Wow Wild Berry and Bravado seedlings. That photo of PWWB is very nice, I hope mine look like that, but in general I would have to say the other seedlings are much stronger growers than PWWB. I just bought seeds of Echinacea 'Baby Swan' and have a bunch of little sprouts. Supposedly a short (2 foot) cultivar of White Swan. Here's my white swan a few years back -

I suggest 'Seafoam', it is hardy to 4b, and it is also rated as Earthkind, which means it is a very disease resistant rose where it was tested in Texas. It has re-bloom similar to Florabunda class roses. and its' foliage is dark green and very pretty. In Northern California 'Seafoam' grows to be 3 and 1/2 by 4 and 1/2 to 5 feet wide. I would expect it to be a bit smaller in your climate. helpmefind.com has photos. I do love the flowers, of 'Blanc de Courbet' but not the plant as much as Seafoam, because Blanc has wicked thorns that have ripped the skin off of the top of my hand when I was picking a bloom. Also, the 4-5 plants of B de C, I've seen have each been somewhat gangly. Lux.

George would be a great help here, especially if you were to add pictures of the two locations! In the area where you can have a large shrub, it sounds like you could plant some paniculatas (a lot of these grow large). However, they start with white blooms usually, which change in 2-4 weeks. Not sure if these would be ok; you said you do not like white... If you do not like whites then a mophead hardy to your location -perhaps a rebloomer- would fit the bill? There are also some arborescens that grow with pink blooms (sometimes called pink Annabelles). Have you seen those at the nurseries? You should verify that you like their pink color before buying as a few people do not like it. Purple-ish hydrangeas require soil that is just a little acidic and shrubs that will resist turning blue. It may be a hassle messing around with the soil pH so I am not sure if I would recommend that.
