Landscape Design Roses Antique Roses

8x8 Pergola...want to cover with flowering vines

Hi! I have an 8x8 pergola (top is 10 X 10) and I'm wanting to grow something to climb and cover it. I'm in South AL, zone 8. I have a dog and 4 kids, so it need to be non toxic. I would also love if it were evergreen. I don't mind pruning a few times a year, but something like a trumpet vine would be too invasive. So far I am thinking Coral Honeysuckle, Peggy Martin or Lady Banks. But I am a novice at best and need advice!

It depends on your climate, but I think Lady Banks would get too big. How about star jasmine, Trachylospermum jasminoides? Evergreen, very fragrant, handsome foliage, tolerant of a range of conditions, no toxicity. I don't know Coral Honeysuckle or 'Peggy Martin', so can't comment on them. If you want a rose, some of the Teas make handsome climbers. 'Mrs. B.R. Cant' and 'Archduke Joseph' both climb for me. Of course they have thorns.

Peggy Martin is an excellent rose but even when South alaba is warmer than is here in North Alabama I do not think it will be evergreen. Unless you are in zones 9 and up it is unlikely any rose is truly evergreen. Otherwise it is great and almost thornless

I wasn’t sure from your post “climbing vine” if you know that roses do not actually climb on their own. You need to tie them yourself. If you choose a real climbing vine like a jasmine or evergreen type one clematis they climb on their own with appropriate support.

I had a St. Joseph's Coat climber years back. Vigorous and I loved that it had all different colors from red to yellow to orange. It had full sun and was disease-free. Look into using Neem Oil to treat your blackspot, rust, etc. I bet someone in the Rose forum could help you. Some of the English climbers might work for your 1/2-day sun location. I have a Cecile Bruner "bush" that has climbed to about 6 feet. It has repeat blooms. The Cecile Bruner "climber" will not repeat bloom. Getting about 8 hours sun on a trellis. No diseases so far. Delicate little pink flowers. Smells nice. Not very bushy/full.

LL, I don't have a veggie garden except for a few lame pots, but I did see something that was very interesting for children, just not sure how ambitious this project might be. It was a large teepee (not covered by anything, just the large branches to form the teepee) and climbing up the wood were all the climbing veggies and flowering vines like morning glory, etc. There was an opening at the front and it was large enough for multiple kids to go in. As an adult I thought it was a blast! I can only imagine how much kids would enjoy it! Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of it. I don't think it took up more space than 8 X 8. It sounds like you plan on making this veggie area quite large.

I am doing square foot gardening with a twist...I use to live in the country with lots of room and did the Ruth Stout gardening technique....but with less room, I am doing the square foot garden this year...I have harvested so much form just one bed it is amazing,,,we have four 4x12 boxes and a long 12" wide bed in the back where I have these wonderful Sunflowers...I plant a few marigolds here and there too..I don't know if they help with the bugs but they are pretty. I tired to plant just the number of plants two people will need, so I have a variety but not too much of anything. I love this method,,,no weeding,,,and mulching everything the way I do,,,,I really am not watering that much although it is in the 90s here now. Right now, I have squash,,several types of beans, broccoli and peas are just going,,cabbage,,onions, peppers, hot and sweet, basil, tomatoes, carrots, mustard, eggplants, bausch, and I just noticed I have little watermelon and cantaloupe...I also have strawberries, only six plants, and cukes,,pole beans (Kentucky Wonder and Contender) and patio, cherry tomatoes,,I tried to grow lettuce but only got one picking,,,I think it got too hot... You might want to define how much shade or light it will get and when it gets that light. If it gets some light try silver lace vine, sweet autumn clematis, virginia creeper (plant it in a pot if you don't want it popping up everywhere and check that handling it does not irritate your skin -- it does with some people), dutchmen's pipe. Whatever you choose, do a bit of research on what it likes before you plant it to save yourself heartache. Also, remember that some vines cling, others twine so depending on what you get, you might need to create support for it. There are a lot of different products available, mesh trellis, wires, etc. Whatever you get, stake it for the first couple of feet. Also, if you want it to cover fast, it's worth the extra money to buy a more mature plant, maybe 2-4 ft high.

Thank you both! I decided to do star Jasmine. My problem now is that I didn't really consider that the posted I want them to climb are in a cement patio...no next to the ground. Would they do ok in a planter and still be able to grow long enough to flourish over a pergola?

What kind of sun does the location of your pergola get? Shade/direct sun - how many hours per day each, if any? The reason I ask is that I grew one plant of star Jasmine on the North side of our house, light but NO sun at all, so even if your pergola is in the shade that should be OK. Mine was was planted in the ground, and grew up to the top of our 3 story house. I looked it up, and star Jasmine will grow in direct sun. We were in zone 9 for most of the time it was there, and it stayed evergreen. No thorns, no mess, and delightful fragrance when it is blooming.

If I were you, I would plant it in a BIG planter(s) at the base of the posts (just make sure it has good drainage), and get one of those wooden trellises you can buy at nurseries and put that on the post, so the Jasmine will have something to climb on to get started.
