animal protection for honeydew?

Canteloupe needs protection from animals. Big time. When ripe, it smells strongly so, and animals love it. In previous years, I'd harvest canteloupes with bites taken out of them. (Which is one way to tell that they're ripe!) My cants are small right now, but I'm ready to protect with buckets when they get large. My honeydews, however, are getting pretty big. My question is to what extent they need protection from animals. When ripe, they don't smell anywhere near as inviting as canteloupes. Have people had trouble with animals snacking on honeydews? I have squirrels, raccoons and possums. The latter two cause the most canteloupe damage.
