5 panel (shaker) interior door and style of home.....
Comments (2)We also love that door style. It was our original choice, but then decided to simplify because we are trying to build aging in place. With that, we're thinking of every possible place that needs cleaning, so going with a single panel to reduce the little ridges that collect dust. All that being said, I was watching Mad Men one night and one of the doors in a residence was multi panels. I then starting noticing these doors everywhere. My conclusion: they transcend a specific style and label. Comments (8)Masonite/Supadoor would be fine in my opinion. You may look at a Trustile MDF door as well as a real stile and rail door will be more stable than a drop routed door (one piece of MDF that is carved). And please do your self the favor of upgrading the butt hinges. The standard off the shelf prehung door hinges are a cheap pot metal type hinge with a crappy brass plated finish. Also and this is my opinion but find a lumberyard or real building material supply house and not a box store for any millwork. Comments (19)We also bought a house a couple years ago that have these doors.... but they are painted white. If yours were solid wood I would not paint but since they aren't, painting will update the look ... a little. I think you need to live in the home for awhile before committing to changes that cost a lot. My concern is that if you change to the shaker doors you like you would also have to change all the door trim and floor molding to a simpler look to match. The cost could snowball especially if you can't diy and have to pay someone to do everything. Even painting is a major cost if you aren't doing it yourself. Is it your forever home? It could be worth your time and money to change if you plan on staying here awhile. But if it is a long time home you also have time to make changes in stages you can prioritize. Our home IS our forever home. I'm not crazy about a lot of things but changing the doors are far down the list of things I want to change. First is kitchen appliances, changing flooring and hopefully someday changing our master closet/bath. I hate the layout but at this point don't know how to make it better. Because of that it is the only place in our house that hasn't been repainted. But my husband tackles a lot of our home projects. Time and money....See Morehow to transform a 6 panel door into a shaker style door
Comments (22)Cpartist, the house is craftsman style, east coast cottage/bungalow, with wide front porch, low pitched roof lines, exposed ceiling beams, thick moldings and trim, and tons of woodwork throughout (we researched and found that the wood is cypress from the builder's property - decades ago). Pecky cypress too. She was quite neglected when we found her, and we are keeping/using every piece of the wood. Yes, the original 6 panel doors are beautiful and traditional. The doors are for the bedrooms, closets, and bathrooms. We just want the doors to be true to the style of the house in the remodeling of our forever home. Those are just as true to the house as a shaker style door. My 1898 house had different doors upstairs from downstairs. In fact upstairs there were also 2 different original style doors. All your doors need are glass knobs....See Morepaltmaie
