Hi Shannon, Although far from being an expert (I don't even think I deserve amateur status yet) I thought I would respond to your question since I've been doing quite a bit of research on these very same (or very similar) critters. I have some morning glory seedlings that have an infestation of some sort in the surrounding soil. I posted a question and link on the Growing from Seed forum a few days ago. I thought I had it figured out and that what I was seeing were called symphylans (do a google search or follow the link below). But I kept reading that symphylans are wary of light and I kept seeing these things on top of the soil. So now I think they could be newly hatched centipedes, which look quite similar (I hope anyway - check out: http://www.ent3.orst.edu/smartkey/display.cfm?pagename=Centipedes&groupname=nogroup) However, your grain of rice reference sounds like soil mealy bugs, but you say they are fast moving and I don't think that these bugs are very mobile (not sure though). It's strange, I searched all over these forums for information on these critters and couldn't find anything. You are now the third person (myself included) that has asked about this in the last few days. There is even another post in this forum from a yesterday that has another link (my original link) to a page about symphylans. At least I finally get to ANSWER a question for once. Good luck. Here in the mojave, mobile homes ( now referred to as modulars) are placed on what is called a permanent foundation which essentially is a crawl space. Black widows and brown recluse spiders are a problem along with burrowing critters such as the mojave ground squirrel and the kangaroo rat. Both species have been known to make nests in the insulation. They get there by burrowing under the footers. A remedy for this would be to either concrete the ground inside the crawl space,( a poster on this forum did just that and sent pics but it was a long time ago) or line the ground with pea gravel heavily which is a good idea anyhow. Insects get in by way of the vents that dont have small mesh screen material. A good solution there is to use metal window screen material behind 1/4" hardware cloth for the venting and make sure your crawl space entry is sealed.Crawl spaces in houses are rare here in the mojave, but i have worked on a few that had crawl spaces. They are very common with modulars.

If there were that many inside your house all at one time it could very well have been dry wood termites. have/had you noticed any small sawdust looking mounds any where in your home before this happened? I had a similar experience years ago when I lived in an apartment in Ohio. Before the bugs I kept noticing sawdust under my bedroom door and just thought it was something caused by the new door rubbing on new carpet. When we did research when we saw the swarm we put two and two together-removed the door and took it outside and it was full of termites! This was a new door and apt manager and pest control figured the door was manufactured somewhere in the south since this type of termite was not common where we lived.

I notice this: All drawers in the lower cabinets, in most cases. Or, a drawer above a door. Undermounted sink. Freestanding, not fitted. Wall mount taps. Actually, "shelf mount" is the right term but today we would call them wall mounted. Oven at torso height. Prep sink. Practical backsplash over the sink: you can hang things to dry. Open shelves near the sink. Built in fridge.
