Building a Home Lighting Design Dilemma

Island pendant and dining chandelier with 24 foot ceilings

I’m in the process of building a home with 24 foot sloped (A frame) ceilings in our kitchen/dining/family room.

The kitchen island pendants would be mounted on a slope from approximately 21 feet. The dining chandelier would be hung from the ceiling peak at 24 feet.

Do I have to buy specific brands? Or can all fixtures be extended to the appropriate length with additional wire/cord?

Build the second floor that it desperately needs. That ceiling height is completely impractical for a kitchen. Or any living space. You can’t even get it lit with standard general lighting practices. Or heated and cooled. Or sound controlled. Or cleaned, painted, or bulbs changed. Totally impractical waste.

Yes you can extend almost any fixture, some you would have to order from the factory with extension others could be rewired and just order more chain. though I would probably go for something that has standard lamp cord and doesn't have rods or chain to make it easier to work with.

What is the style of the house and do you have a floor plan?

there is no min for celing height for pendents.....i'd stick to the low volatge pendents they look much better also hang on a thin coax cable as compared to a thick rod or thick wire....check out some of the applacation shots at lbl lighting web site and tech lighting web site.....pm with any questions i'm a lighting designer so can help out.....remember that pendents hang about 2.5 ft off a counter top....just above eye level.

@Porter, I didn't get the LED Edison bulbs yet-the store where we got the pendants gave me 3 halogen bulbs to see if it was better for me as I didn't like the yellow light at all. I am still going to order them when I do a Prime order to see the difference. That fixture is in a nook--off centered from the pendants--it comes with a chain ;however I am undecided if a table is going to go there or it will stay open, so had it semi-flush mounted. Does it look odd or out of place? @Beth, Right now they are 34" so when the quartz is installed, it should be about 32 33" from counter to bottom of lights. They seem high, but any lower they are going to be in our eyes.

Hello everyone!! I NEED HELP!!! I purchased 2 Duke Oversized Pendants (16 inch overall diameter) in 2020 on Pottery Barn site. They make my whole kitchen!! The glass on one of them broke and Pottery Barn site says No Longer available! Ive been in tears for weeks!!! Can anyone tell me where I can find one of these?? My email is ginamt2@yahoo.com. Why do you have a 24 foot ceiling height?

Most fixtures come with a maximum 10’ of wire. You will need a lot longer than that. There are a few brands that will customize but you will pay a premium and the leads times will be long. Hammerton and Hubbardton Forge are two lines you might look at. I think general lighting will be a challenge with this ceiling height. I recommend you engage a qualified lighting designer.

If it’s A-frame, will there be any beams, functional or not, going across? Making the crossbar of an A? Lighting could be suspended from that?

Otherwise, cross-chains, like you see on some two-story porches, might be necessary.

Besides the length of wire and chain you will need you have to make sure the fixtures can go on sloped ceilings. Not all can.

It‘s a big design mistake to have such high ceilings. Lighting won’t be the only expensive challenge that barely works, or doesnt work at all.

Did your architect include electrical plans that show how they intended to light the space? Did they mention the challenges of lighting a room with such high ceilings? You may want to consider one large chandelier (large in both width and height) in the kitchen over the island rather than smaller pendants which may look odd on such long chain/wire. And then rely heavily on task lighting, including undercabinet lights. You may also perhaps invest in lighting the interiors of the drawers and cabinets.

I might be totally off with did suggestion but would wall sconces help in this situation.

We have a gable roof in our great room -- not that high, but high. Many lights are available with adjustable cables or rods. We found pendants from WAC that have a 10' cable. Others we looked at could be ordered with extra rods and wiring to extend up to 12'. We have a central i-beam running the length of ours, so we had to use two lights on each side. Make sure your mounting hardware will work on an angle.
