graft a rose tree

How do you graft a rose tree? has anyone done it? I'd like to take some wild rose branches that are really straight, graft it onto a rootstock rose, and then graft a top. How would I do that?

I had a Fragrant Cloud Tree Rose that died 5 years ago, but then the roots sent up a sprout. I let it grow tall, tied it to the dead stalk for support, then I grafted it at the same height as the original graft--with Fragrant Plum. (just a fragrant coincidence LOL)

It took and is growing great, so if you want to do it, what you really need is rootstock for tree roses.

I will say unfortunately Fragrant Plum is long and spindly, 5-6 feet, so not the best choice for a tree rose, but it smells great and is very happy!

Choose a scion stock that stays short!

I have a couple more multi-color grafted roses, but they're not as dramatic and don't bloom as much as the iceberg one. This one is a grafted rose tree of Living Easy/ Easy Going that has pure yellow and orange roses: The contrast is not that dramatic because the yellows and oranges are in a similar color range. The red roses on this one are Olympiad and it also has white roses edged in pink that I don't recall the name of: Not too many roses right now, but it was covered in roses earlier in the season. Early this year, I had also purchased a couple of grafted tree roses of Julia's Child (yellow) and Ebe Tide (purple). I was really lookinf forward to seeing these in bloom, but when they did, they turned out to only have yellow roses, so I took them back.

Plant a Temple's Upright Sugar Maple (Acer). One speciman, at age 69 in 1971, was 75 feet high with a 12-foot spread. Another had a height of 50 feet and a banch spread of just 1 foot! (from Wyman's Plant Encyclopedia). Seriously, it's your property and you should put in whatever will make you happy. If you're in Western PA, you'll want to pick something that can handle the winters.

About 15 years ago A couple I know from central FL. did this with several different varieties grafted onto one bush. They called it "Slick Willy". Weird looking thing. Didn't last long.

Here are some pic update from my J&P sale and Wayside Gardens sale. Wayside Gardens sale roses (The Ancient Mariner x2 , Princess Alexandra Of Kent x2 , Darcey Bussell, Tess of the d'Urbervilles) were stressed from shipping in high temperature then got hit by the sun in my garden even they were under a tree, all the new growths died and it took a while with a lot of extra care before some new growths showed up again. Here are the pics of the 2 with slowest growths (The Ancient Mariner and Princess Alexandra Of Kent) taking today. I wasn't sure that these 2 could make it. I'm glad they did.
