Hello!

I'm having a hard time finding a large piece of art to fill this my living room wall.

The current pictures are okay but feel very generic to me.

IMO first do the furniture layout as you like it then taka picture of the space . Are you having a buffet ? Waht are the two things on the floor ? IMO art unless a really favorite original art piece is best left for after everything else is in place. BTW art best hung where the center of the art is at eye level so 60 -65 " from the floor to the center

Hi Everett: Thought I might add a bit to the discussion here. In your initial post you mentioned leveling sand. FA-2 (torpedo) sand is for the bedding course on brick patios. You should not be using sand for any part of a wall base. Gravel for wall bases in Northwest Indiana should be what is commonly referred to as "Grade 8", also designated as CA-6. This is compactable gravel for the entire wall base. There would be no sand and no other gravel in the base portion. Base compaction is normally done in 2" lifts unless you have an industrial compactor. To echo Revolutionary Gardens comment, using a hand tamper will not be satisfactory to compact the base. Rent the biggest compactor you can handle. The gravel behind the wall (between the wall and the patio should be what is commonly referred to as "3/4 Clean", also designated as CA-7. This is free draining gravel and would be behind 100% of all walls we build, whether they are modular like yours or natural stone like the photo below. Free draining gravel eliminates hydrostatic pressure and surcharge, which means your wall will not tip. Your wall height is such that 4-6" behind the wall should be satisfactory. On the outcropping wall in the photo below you can see the space behind the wall during construction. This is where the CA-7 goes. You could keep the walls as is and go deeper on the draperies and some furniture. I think dressing the front window as shown would make a huge difference to the short wall. Hang drapes as high as you can; include, to the floor, semi-sheers. Use art to give walls a different dimension.

You have a great sense of color and proportion and it connects these two lovely and relaxing rooms. I think a gallery wall would muck this up. The size of your mirror is spot on and you are right, you will likely break the bank and drive yourself crazy trying to find good art that size. It is needle in a haystack hunting. I'd make finding that piece your five year goal. And, in the mean time do either of these as an in between phase to retain the great size of that mirror: A.) Try a faux mercury finish on the mirror to tone down the brightness and add a small sculptural doo-dads on each side like sconces or matching plates or chunks of aged wood. (Excuse my horrible attempt at replicating faux mercury glass!) B.) See if you can remove the mirrors from the black frame and use the frame to surround some nice wallpaper to use as temporary art. Lastly, please don't add colorful accents to this space in which you have mastered calm, warm neutrals. It is heavenly. What paint color is on your walls?

Why does it look like the sofa has its back to the fireplace? Even if you never use your fireplace this is an eccentric furniture arrangement. Do you have a TV in this room somewhere? Love your floors by the way.

Future plan is to remodel the fireplace and have the couch face the fireplace with a frame TV.

Yeah I'd worry more about the arrangement of the furniture than the art. But I am biased because I had that same door cutting my room off from the TV and I hated it.

Wish I had been smart enough to get that color of flooring, but I wasn't and it would be such a pain to change it.

I’d like to see the couch (and rug) turned 90 degrees so that the back faces the window wall rather than the fireplace. The console and TV would then be placed on the large wall where the feather art currently is. This would open up the fireplace to the room, and also bring the seating closer to the TV. Currently, it looks too far for away for optimum viewing.

OMG you have to fix this furnishings layout first. Turn the sectional.

The TV is on the wrong wall.

Oh, so the TV should be on the art wall.
The picture below shows a different angle. Where you can see the dining room and the other side.

The kitchen is beside the wall with feathers. Not sure if that will be an issue for the TV

Why would it be an issue with the kitchen behind the wall?

Your sectional should be placed about 6" away from the wall so that the draperys and the heat or AC can flow without barriers.

My sectional can't be moved to the be again the window it's too large.

With the tv on the feather wall the way the couch is designed not everyone could see the TV.

Beverley's right. You need to rotate that sectional 90°. It will make the whole room more inviting and the traffic pattern easier. And if the chaise on your sectional can be moved to the opposite side, then you'll be able to rotate the sectional a full 180° which will do 3 things:
- comfortable TV viewing on the (current) art wall
- comfortable fireplace viewing
- console table behind the sectional next to the patio doors
Once done, I'd suggest choosing an accent colour. The colours in your room remind of of a November day at the beach (in a good way!). I'd be looking for a slightly muted coral or teal to add a little zing to your subdued palette. Get a throw or a couple pillows and maybe a vase or a lamp in your accent colour. And then keep your eyes peeled for a piece of art that makes you happy and suits the palette you've chosen. That might not happen for a while-- art is intensely personal. And if the piece you eventually find doesn't "match", well-- accessories are relatively cheap so you can replace them if that happens.

It isn’t clear to me why the couch can’t be placed as shown in Beverly’s diagram. It should not be right up against the left wall as shown above, and it should be pulled away from the window to allow access there in order to operate and clean the widows, run a vacuum, and allow for air flow from your vents. I might pull it out at least two feet from the window.

For posters to understand the room. Post dimensions with walls windows and door ways on a sheet of paper and post a picture of that.

Can you remove the curved/wedge piece and move the other piece to make an end to the sofa? Then you can turn the couch and move the lounge piece to the right side.

I like the TV on the wall with the art much better than I think I would next to the fireplace. But it is hard to tell the dimensions. How many people do you normally need to seat at once? That is really big sectional.
