Porches & Decks Lighting Design Dilemma

Design Help please!

Looking for design suggestions. The house is midcentry modern architecture with butterfly roof. Any thoughts about increasing the curb appeal? We are preparing for a full renovation and looking for ideas. Front door is not visable from the street and some visitors don't know if they should go up the stairs or not. My immediate need is lighting since one of my wall sconces is broken.

I need to choose paint colors, light fixtures, and would love reccomendations as well as any other helpful suggestions too!

You need to make it obvious that the way into the house is up the stairs. Hence, somehow emphasize the foot of the stairs with landscaping and color. Could you continue the wall to the other side of the driveway? We need a better photo of the entrance to the stairs. Could you have the stairs rebuilt so that the steps aren't so high and hence that the bottom step comes out into the driveway. You could also widen the stairs to emphasize them and perhaps have a spot for a planter on the bottom.

Could you share better pictures of the front of the house? I would relocate the bushes blocking the entry and open that area up.

In looking at the first photo I was wondering how one gains access to the door. I prefer when there is a clear path to the entrance. I also notice in later pictures that shrubs were planted much too close to the house. My suggestion would be to reshape the border to eliminate the bed on the street side of the path. New shrubs should not be planted so close to the house. The remainder of the beds could be filled with low perennials/ground cover. I do not live in your zone so I can't recommend specific plants. Black or navy blue would be nice for the door.

Ha! I tend to want a few more recessed lights than the average user, but this is way too much! I would suggest that you go to a lighting store and see if they have a lighting specialist, not just a sales person. Offer to pay for their time if you aren't going to buy product from them. Also note, that all recessed light aren't the same. There are mid-grade options that are much better quality (lighting wise) than those sold at big box stores. Was doing research for a project recently and the electrician produced technology from 10 years ago for the recessed light he planned to install. No way! There are much better products out there now, but they aren't found in the warehouse of the local lighting supply store that caters to builders.

Due to time constraints (unplanned bath remodel due to large water loss), we will be an installing 2 30” vanities with a 3” pullout between them. Estimate 1-1.5” filler on either side. So, it will be 65-66” with 2 sinks. There will be walls on either side of the vanity (the left will be a partial wall with glass as it is next to the shower). We are planning on 2 medicine cabinets. At this point, planning on Robern (want outlets inside, no lights on exterior) but are open to other brands if you have ideas. Ou preference is to recess them. The contractor has told us we can recess the 20” mirrors, but if we go with the 24” he would have to move pipes which would not be worth doing for us. So, I have a number of initial questions... Would you go with the recessed 19” or the wall hung 24”? Given the middle pullout, would you center the mirrors on the sinks or on the entire vanity cabinet? I’m concerned about the look - especially that it would leave a lot more space between the mirrors than on either side. We are planning on doing wall sconces on either side & between the mirrors. The pieces look like nice pieces, but it’s very matchy matchy, which is usually not great. I’d personally remove the chair and either return it if you can, sell it or use somewhere else in the house. I’d keep the couch and loveseat in an L configuration with a round pedestal table between them. I’d find an accent chairs in a pattern or color to use in the room, and then I’d add in a coffee table, floor lamp table lamp, pillows and art. I think you need to get the seating figured out first.

I like the color palette of the house you posted as one you like. I can see enough of the whole property to help much. But, I could see a small low cedar linear half wall to the left of the stairs with large stainless house numbers and perhaps a small arrow pointing up.

Can you stand in your street and take a photo of the full front of your home to post? It’s hard to tell what we are looking at here in relation to anything else.

A wall or fence section only lower with your street address. Then repeat that wood for new wood garage door. Might add some trim up above garage too to break up that wall and continue linear lines.

Here is mock up with body of house SW Cyberspace and linear lights. I also made garage door wood or wood look. Small side wall to repeat wood with large stainless house numbers. A tiny down light over numbers would be great if possible for night time. Looks like deco and I are on the same page!

Soffit lighting to wash down the walls, or landscape wall wash lighting to light up the walls. Surface mounted step lights would help a lot too. People often neglect the use of landscape lighting it can really be a guide. also path lights might help. for the front door I would do up/down lights, as again they will light up the foot path at the door and wash the area with light with out being in your face.
