Can anyone tell me about Yves Piaget
Comments (12)lol funny you ask ...it started off doing pretty well. It was growing and filling out nicely, probably about 3.5 x 2 (but probably not fully grown yet). There weren't tons of flowers but they were large, gorgeous and the fragrance was incredible. I did plant it deep. It did tend towards some bs and/or mildew but the blooms were worth it (for me at least). For most of my roses, I let them get established and then stop winter-protecting once they are "old enough" to take care of themselves. After several years, none of my roses get winter protected except the David Austin "Evelyn". Last winter, I only protected about half the amount I normally would to start weaning it off winter protection. However, in Toronto, last winter was pretty horrible in that we had periods of time of freezing cold temperatures, really cold even for us, but very little snow and snow cover. Come this Spring, Yves was dead. A lot of people lost quite a few garden plants, lots of things didn't make it, and Yves is clearly VERY borderline hardy (even Celine Forrestier makes it through my winters now with no winter protection other than fallen leaves). Live and learn I guess. I waited throughout this summer to see if it might come back but no luck. I will be buying another for next year as the blooms were wonderful and I definitely want it in my garden. I will however be winter protecting completely from now on ... just like Evelyn ... I guess some roses will just always need that here :)...See MoreCan anyone tell me about Red Intuition or Henri Matisse?
Comments (29)Great pictures, Markiz37! Nice to see Pink Intuition can be so beautiful, even if it doesn't grow or bloom as much as its red counterpart. Kathy and Susan, I actually feel better in a strange way at hearing Hocus Pocus might be the same as Memphis Music. I feel better about not having been able to buy the former. So maybe that reverted Memphis Magic I seem to have is actually the reverted Black Beauty I was curious about. Or if not, at least is indestinguishable. Makes me think of some other roses that are commonly mistaken for each other: like the floribundas Nicole and Hanna Gordon; the HT Barcelona and tea Francis Dubreuil. Or what about those body-bag roses at Walmart or Home Depot with pictures and printed descriptions that look identical to well-known varieties but which are being sold with names I can find in no database anywhere? Hmm.... sounds a little suspicious to me. I have yet to buy any like that. I have a hard enough time dealing with somebody giving me a gift rose without a name. I have a pathological need to know what I'm growing. "Yellow rose" just is not good enough. lol I wish I could afford (space and money both) to order duplicates. I actually don't have more than one of any single rose I grow at the moment. Maybe that's living dangerously. But my yard is so tiny. I try to partially compensate by giving rooted cuttings of some (older ones of course) to friends and neighbors. That way, if one of mine meets an untimely death, I have someone I can mooch some cuttings from. I couln't recall the names of my failed Careless Love striped rose the other day. It didn't die, just never had any stripes. Now I remember it's from the Radiance family. But I still not sure if it reverted back to Radiance or Mrs. Charles Bell, supposedly a subtle shell-pink version of the Radiance roses. Anyway, it's sitll growing happily in front of my next door neighbor's home. Mike...See MoreCan anyone tell me anything about Lithuanian Crested Pink?
Comments (26)Back on topic - Lithuanian Crested Pink (LCP) My seed for this came from a trade with Steve "forgot his name but it's written on the packet" at least 7 years ago. I've been saving the seed from the largest, meatiest tomatoes with the smallest and fewest seed locules. Most of the time this is a wonderfully productive plant. Even cursed by the early blight this year, I had some productive, but not exemplary plants. ( I sprayed with copper sulphate at the first sign.) LCP is mild, sweet, fruity and my family loves it so it goes in every year, make as good addition to canned tomatoes because it has so few seeds. Wonderful salad: LCP sliced lengthwise, dress with 1:1 mayo: sour cream, thin with lemon juice, dill snippets, thin sliced red onion. My daughter and husband prefer Rose overall. I've mentioned this previously. Johnny's seeds of Maine advertised that Rose was better than Brandywine. I grew and ate both side by side - Rose won and goes in every year. It Also produced this year in spite of blight. The flavor is very fruity and you can tell when this is included in a sauce. I've saved seed for more than 10 years and have some fruits that have so few seed locules, they *almost* look seedless :-) New love this year: Coustralee - a keeper, big, flavorful, only drawback is the large, plentiful locules. I squish the seeds out before canning. Polish Pastel - like this one, productive, though it's a bit bland. Nice for canning since it is firm and keeps some shape. I think this may be unstable though, as one year the seed I planted had little resemblence to the yellow bell with pink highlights. John from Australia has not answered my email lately :-( Bless him for sharing this one with me. Tomatoes should not be political fodder - if you love one that does not mean the others are no good. It seems the different varieties are suited for different localities and weather conditions, different palates, personalities and uses. Peace through tomatoes. Comments (7)Here's the pic's I took today... LindaC-You mentioned dove tailing, but I wasn't sure which piece you meant, so I took pic's of both. This is the marble top chest...side of drawer This is the chest with the mirror...the back. Does the hardware give any clues as to age, or whether the mirror is original? I do see the difference in the wood color...now that you point it out! Still very curious about the stickers on the back...any ideas? Hinge that allows the mirror to swivel This is a top view of the drawers on chest with mirror Side view of drawer (Mirror Chest) The Pine Chest...This is my all time favorite bargain! I love this chest, even with all its stains and imperfections. Linda-you wanted to see the sides, back and top... This is the right side...in looking more closely, I think you are correct that it's one piece. The "line" that you see is actually a crack...there's one on the other side, also. However, if you run your hand along the top of the side, it's smooth-no seams. Is that what you meant by "solid"? This is the left side...the crack is more pronounced. The crack on the left side actually goes into the top somewhat. See how it's sort of a diagonal crack? If that was a paneled side, it would be straight, right? The top pine chest...hard to get a nice clear picture of whole top... And the back Definitely curious about the dark color. Linda-you also suggested having new knobs made. Who does that...what would I look up? By the way, I wouldn't change the knobs...I love them. Can I add something new? As I was taking these pic's, remembered another bargain chair...about $10 in a resale shop. My first chair had a laminated seat, but I'm not sure about this one...could be just one piece. Need trained eyes to check it out. The bottom...See MoreRelated Professionals
