Flooring Design Dilemma Bathrooms

MSI Penny Round Grigio Mix Tile

I'm looking at the penny round grigio mix tile for a shower floor. I've seen product reviews that reference it being used as a shower floor, but I can't tell if the review is for this specific product. The description is glossy, which makes me concerned that it will not be ideal as a floor in a shower.

But has anyone used this specific tile as a floor in a shower? Any issues?

I think you better have a real experttile setter or this could be a disaster with those different shades of tile and slipping not an issue with that much grout.

I agree with @Patricia Colwell Consulting

unless you've done this before, Penny tile is the most difficult.

If you aren't careful, each 12" sq mesh will show, once the tile is finished... then you're screwed and will have to remove it all and start over.

Make certain they are all from the same dye lot and get a Pro.

Rhome - I didn't spot this thread earlier, but will add my two cents. I'm a few years older (58) and also live in the PNW. We have tile floors in the bathrooms (heated) and tile at the front entry and mud room that is unheated. I'm thankful every day that we don't have unheated tile floors in the kitchen. Too hard and too cold. And it's the kind of cold that goes through a thick pair of socks unless they are wool. I tend not to wear shoes in the house, and those tile floors are a chilling surprise every time I stand on them for more than 15 seconds. We did pre-finished hardwood which is a bit more forgiving in a lot of ways. This is a beach house and we have a large dog who refuses to let anyone (including the vet techs) near her with nail clippers, plus wet and sand. We have oak that's kind of a busy grain in sort of a honey color. It hides just enough, and I don't sweat the patina it will get over the years. When it gets bad, we'll have it refinished.

We gutted the entire house and are done with everything but kitchen and main floor bath. Shaker 3 panel doors, shaker cabinets, wide shaker style trim. We used tongue and groove knotty pine boards and reversed them on the ceiling and painted white - so there is some cracking and wearing, turned out great! I did black octagon floor tile with white subway tile for wall in downstairs bath and got sconces from RH. I don't know, Ha- I think it's going to be vintage chic farmhouse meets rustic / industrial?! :)

I saw that listing the other day and remember being conflicted about the penny rounds. I decided that, had penny rounds been as commonly available in that era as they are now, we likely would have seen some use of them by MCM builders/designers. Like traditional 1 x 1 or even 2 x 2 tile, they offer an uninterrupted neutral background. I think the problem I had with this particular installation was the visibility of the seams where the sheets meet. At first I wasn’t a fan of how the tiles worked on the niche, but then I realized it was probably a decent installation given the material choice. I do worry about relying on so much grout in a wet installation, but I’m not mad at it.

Echoing other posters:

I absolutely love penny round tile, but we've seen more than a few posts over the years of lovely tile badly set. When amateurs do it, often you can "see the lines". You know what I mean, the 12" square lines. Penny round tile must be absolutely perfectly installed -- go for it, but pay for the Grand Master Tile Installer Extrordinare.

As for whether that tile is appropriate for a shower floor, ask the manufacturer. They'll know the truth. If this specific tile isn't appropriate for your shower floor, I'm very sure you can find a first-cousin tile that will work -- penny tile isn't hard to find.
