Windows Building a Home Design Dilemma

Marvin windows—can I mix casements and tilt turns?

Our style is fairly modern for the build, and we have great views, so there will be many large windows with no mullions/muntins) Some areas (like the dining room) are a little tight for tilt turns that swing inward. And maybe I won’t like them by the kitchen/laundry sink?

I’m shocked at how difficult this is to research. You’d think there would be a plethora of operating videos available. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Has anyone used the Marvin retractable screens? Do they only work with casements?

Certainly you can mix Casements and T&T's they ae about the most compatible looking series to series.

I put a large Marvin tilt turn window in my old house. I really liked it (as I had learned to in Germany). Although they are expensive you do get the huge uninterrupted opening and the hopper ventilation. Of course you need to be sure that you have the space to inswing and have them properly installed so that they can open all the way (like a door). I am considering some for my current house and am wary of vinyl windows (even German ones). I also am curious if others have the vinyl.

Don't necessarily want to get into technical detail "debate" but Loewen claims to use Coastal Douglas Fir. The April 2010 Forest Service labs Woodhandbook (http://www.fpl.fs.fed.us/documnts/fplgtr/fpl_gtr190.pdf) does NOT test vertical grain DF as a category; Loewen website simply cites the handbook findings and seems to be in ballpark of accurate in claiming that their DF has better performance characteristics to Ponderosa Pine IF I am understanding things correctly. While I am interested in performance numbers and especially glazing performance, I am equally interested in forum "expert" opinions on functionality, customer experience, warranty service, etc. Thanks for any other input. And yes I will seek out looking at more things live, but while that is what I see and touch, it is what is under the hood that probably will have greatest influence on long term satisfaction. Added via edit, and in case like me you need a resource that describes in plain English what some of the measurements mean and in what circumstances they might be important you might find this page valuable the table on that page(http://workshopcompanion.com/KnowHow/Design/Nature_of_Wood/3_Wood_Strength/3_Wood_Strength.htm) also supports claim that DF is stronger than PP.

+1 to roof35's comments. Sounds like a botched install. Plumb and level are of little consequence (within reason of course), the main concern is that its square. Your installer should have put his level away and adjusted the window based on the sash to frame reveals which would have alleviated this. Regarding the hardware, Marvin uses the same (or similar) hardware as any other window company. I can see why you might think that is looks insufficient, however it is all engineered with maximum capacities based on size, weight, etc. Reputable manufacturers like Marvin are very conservative in staying well within those parameters for long term performance. It sounds like you are now stuck in the unfortunate situation where you sourced the windows and hired a guy to install them. This situation results in failure at a very high rate and inevitably ends in finger pointing. Your best bet at this point is to get the installer and a manufacturer or supplier rep there at the same time to hash things out and come up with a gameplan to address.

I purchased two 8' wide sliding glass doors from Alpen in April of 2021. They were delivered and installed June 2021. One fixed panel had a scratch inside the glass all the way from top to bottom. The handles were wrong and the new handles and new fixed panel didn't come in until August 2021. The doors are painted with a thin coat of marine paint that scratches off very easily. The old handles and the new handles swim around on the door and scratched all the paint around them. I spent all day touching up all the paint scratches and dings on both inside and outside the doors. Their idea of preventing the handles from swimming around is using loctite on the screws which didn't work. They did not like my idea of some sort of sleeve around the screws to prevent the handles from moving all around. I'm worried about how the paint will hold up since it's so thin and easy to scratch. Just my two cents. I guess we will see how they keep out the cold this winter.

We love our Marvin casement windows. Do NOT love our retractable screens. really wish we had skipped them. they come out constantly and do not slide easily.

We also have Marvin casements we are happy with. A few of them have retractable screens, mostly in the front of the house for cross breezes, but we are in FL so they will rarely be used more than a few days during the winter season when we have no humidity. We mixed 2 types of Marvin casements and the average person won't notice, specially as the design of the house makes it hard to see 2 sides of the house at the same time.

Agree with MWM, tilt/turns and casements can be visually very complementary.

@east bay 10, thanks for telling me that. I’ve been going in circles with the website, and went back to the brochures the showroom gave me last month, where I’d dogeared tilt turns.

Let me clarify something since this has caught some attention.

The reason for Marvin's decision (as I was told by the rep) are 1) declining sales and 2) Marvin is building very large Ultimate casements (both in width and height) so it was deemed, there is no longer a need for the T/T.

BTW An inswing Ultimate casement is available (or was as I haven't quoted one in a while) as a special quote. The special handling of this raises the price so 90% of the time, my customers decide the standard outswing is just fine.
