Music keeping rabbits away?

Anyone ever try playing music around your garden to keep rabbits away? I doubt it would work long term but even a week would make a big difference.

Rabbits don't care about music. Maybe if you had an air siren to make blasting noises on a motion sensor that might spook them for a while.

Try using predator urine, liquid fence, or other scent deterrents, those will work better. A motion sensor sprinkler can help a little. Actual physical barriers work best.

Tune the radio to loud mouth talk station recordings, the rabbits should quickly rush away, as should any human.

ronkw I am with you up until the no-till. That is not to say you are wrong, only that it has not worked for me. I till every season, sometimes use a hoe or shovel. I till in compost so it will start to work faster, then laying on top. I till to kill bad bugs like horn tomato worms, which hibernate in the soil, then infest the Spring plants. One study found a decrease of up to 90% after tilling. I use coffee waste compost, leaves, grass clippings most years & compost is the best way to get well drained or water retention (LOL, it true, but sounds impossible), great soil. This is the way to get good soil for rows, raised beds, tilled or no till. Some Birds will stay away if you use fake owls,fake snakes & real cats or a shotgun. Rabbits, the mesh must be 1 inch square instead of 2 X 4, to keep young rabbits out of the garden. Live traps & rabbit boxes work also.

I've stood at the kitchen window and watched bunnies chow down on plants that were so loaded with ground cayenne that they appeared to have red leaves - not saying it won't work elsewhere, though, and sure worth a try! Last season a fellow GWer told me to try planting lots & lots of cilantro; according to her the bunnies would go after the cilantro and leave other stuff alone. I can't believe it, but so far it seems to be working - the rabbits do really go for it. I've got a couple of large stands, about 3' x 3', and at least 25 singles throughout the gardens (protected them until they were about 10" high). All direct-sown. Plus, I've been sticking cilantro seeds into the ground here and there every time I plant something else. Nothing else has been nibbled on except the cabbage, and I expected that (it's pretty much planted for the bunnies, anyway).

I've used Milorganite with good success. It does stink though, to the point of where you don't have to be a rabbit to smell it, but it does the job, and is a good fertilizer too if used sparingly. I've found the only 100% effective way to keep rabbits and deer from eating everything in my yard is to have chicken wire around whatever I don't want eaten. They even eat my Adam's Needle yuccas and rose bushes, so, I've switched to more dangerous types of yuccas like Spanish Dagger and Spanish Bayonet. That way, those plants are so dangerous and sharp that I don't have to protect them at all.

that may work well for you, we tend to leave our ground fallow for about a week before planting (more out of procrastination than anything) and they don't seem to stick around (as much) after they have thoroughly foraged through the dirt. The cd on a string has limited success. The theory behind it is that a bright glint, in an animals mind, is usually that of the eye of a predator. much like shining a flashlight or catching an animals eye in your headlamp you kind of get that odd glare. but anyway, they associate it with danger and avoid the area. The problems we had were keeping them in an area where they would spin and just like anything else after awhile they seemed to lack effectiveness. if you are not adverse to sport, being in a rural setting (i would not suggest otherwise) a little bird shot in a .22 goes a long way (note: the casing will jamb in a semi automatic rifle or pistol, only recommended for a revolver or bolt action rifle that accepts .22 LR cartridges.) Also various outdoor/farm supply stores sell sparrow live traps for chicken coups which can be baited with a little bird seed; although i have not tried the caging setup yet so i cannot attest to how well it works. i can't help but think scare crow when i think of a corn field :) just a thought, do you have any bird feeders in the area that attract the birds? if so, maybe moving them farther from the garden would help? and if not, maybe adding them would draw them from the garden... like sacrificial companion plants. oh and another tid bit learned from experience and a lot of time correcting it, if you buy bird seed, avoid mixes with thistle (unless you happen to like thistle) it survives the intestinal tract and sprout everywhere the birds have been. we made that mistake a few years ago and have been battling it ever since. I go out about once a month or so on the ranger and cut up any i see with a hand held weed whacker and as long as i get them before they seed out they usually don't come back in the area well, that got a bit windy, hopefully something was helpful, good luck! haha I figured it was a long shot. I have a lot of outdoor experience and I always thought the motion activated sprinkler was the best idea to date. We have dogs but they are inside at night. The rabbit in question has found a way in. I figured out where and patched it but the style of fence I have makes it only a matter of time before he finds a new way in. I have hundreds of feet of fence with woods on the other side. There is not easy/cheap way to fence.

The bunny has had a taste of my garden for a week now so I doubt deterrents will work - but would be effective against other rabbits.

A few days ago I caught a rabbit in a Hav-a-heart trap which was baited with pecans. It was supposed to catch a pesky squirrel but this bunny liked nuts too. Being in a rural area it was easy to relocate.

If it's already tasted, then make it taste bad. Scent deterrents can work great. But if you rather not do that, then taste deterrents can also work well.

Motion sensor lights can work and be gotten used to. Sometimes flash tapes and pinwheels can be used, and sometimes gotten used to. Some folks like to use ultrasonics or high pitched noise makers, but a lot of folks with pets rather not use those. Owl scares can sometimes work- motion sensor automated ones or ones that otherwise move work better than stationary ones over time. Some folks use snake scares or coyote scares with varying success.

If you got enough land or can go outside that fence you could try the trick of making somewhere else more appealing so they don't go to your garden. Kind of like how some folks put out deer feed seed out on back lot so the deer graze there instead of in the gardens closer to the house. Not a perfect solution, but it can help.

In my experience, urban wildlife are hard to repel. They are "street-smart" with regard to noise, smells, scarecrows, etc. They are fully used to humans being around, and just laugh at such attempts. That being said, predator threats like urine might work, though I've tried it with cat litter, and have had no success.

I did plant "distraction" stuff but it is near the woods and in more shade and taking longer to grow. What really worried my is my motion camera took pics of him coming in at midnight and out at 4am. That was 4 hours exploring......

I am actually shocked it has not ate a lot more - yet.

I have had zero luck with live traps in my yard. To much "safe" food.

My yard (a so-called "lawn") has a lot of wild white clover mixed in with several other weeds and the clover seems to keep the bunnies satisfied most of the time. When I used to grow strawberries they'd go after those for dessert but not bother much else.

We were talking about this the other day! In the 90's the downtown area started putting up speakers very high and blasting classical music to deter the goth people!

Ended up with a new generation of classical music lovers!

Rather than music, try using something noisy, plugged into a motion-sensing light socket. I kept deer away from my apple trees that way, with a motor which powered a pipe snake.
