Kordes Florentina?
Comments (13)Thanks for the great pictures of Florentina and honest estimations of growth patterns, newroses! If a climber gets to 8-10 feet here in zone 5 we're usually pretty happy, though I know that isn't necessarily expected from your estimate based on warmer zones. For what it's worth, annececilia I planted Florentina here in zone 5 Nebraska based on exactly those Palatine pictures, plus my highly enthusiastic experiences with Kordes roses in general (and Palatine roses in specific). I disbud all my roses in the first season so I can't comment on the blooms, but the foliage has been glossy and disease free as reported, and has grown to a respectable height for a new rose in the first year. I'd say go for it, though expecting much fragrance sounds like a long shot. I can't think of any true climber that's fragrant for me, except for some Austins that sort of climb (like Teasing Georgia). Mostly climbers I grow for the blooms, particularly since I want them growing out of nose height anyway. Cynthia...See MoreHoneymoon aka Florentina
Comments (8)I'm sorry - I can understand the frustration. This has happened to me more than once and after working hard to prepare a spot, baby the plant along (whether it needed it or not), then only to find out it is not the correct rose and may have to wait another year is maddening. I hope, somehow, you can find one soon. Beautiful rose, though! Florentina is on my list for next year. I would love to grow Honeymoon as well - the pictures are fantastic - but I already have White Eden and Sombreuil. Another white rose in the mix may be too much - or maybe not :)...See Moreclimber as a shrub ?
Comments (3)You can keep a climber as a large 5 or 6 foot shrub. But it requires that you prune hard in the spring, summer and fall. I have kept a rambler down to 7 feet but I had to carry my clippers with me all the time. When you see a cane headed up to the sky, you clip it down to match the other's height. I should warn you that Kordes roses get very mad if you cut them back hard. They tend to get even with you by throwing up VERY long canes just to say, how do you like that! It works much better if the climber is a floribunda. Older climbers are not able to stay as a shrub because of their extreme growth. I think that pegging will only encourage tall growth. which will them flop over....See MoreFrustrated with Florentina
Comments (33)SoFL rose I planted Florentina on Fortuniana last year and it grew into a thorny monster within a few months and did not bloom so I shovel pruned it . Have Lady in Red instead . slow grower and the few blooms I got are deep red . other Kordes roses that got huge with no bloom that I shovel pruned are :FB summer Sun and HT Sunny sky . I do have some other roses that never bloom but I am waiting : Austin's Princess Anne (healthy 1 year that never bloomed ) , Austin's The Endeavor(getting big but rarely blooms ) , Princess Charlene de Monaco (getting big but rarely blooms but when she does I love her fragrance ) ....See MoreMasLovesRoses_z8a GA
