Design Dilemma Home Decorating Furniture

help me finish my living room please!

last year

We moved and had to start over. It also meant that we had to buy everything without seeing it. I am now a little lost on the finishing details so I would really appreciate your advice on things like accent pillows, side tables, coffee table or ottoman, etc. some extra info: ceilings are 10 feet. Sofas are 84” wide. Area rug is 9 x 12. The walls are pale oak and everything is beige/taupe/cream.

Some leather upholstered parsons chairs would go nicely with the lines of the table and the cabinetry, and would also have the same lines as the stools. Maybe you even want to do the red leather, as you've already established that as an accent color, and it looks like there's some red in the carpet under the table. Big plus -- they're easily dressed up with a slipcover when you're ready for a change. I think I can see quite a bit of wrought iron or oil rubbed bronze in the knobs, curtain rods & table lamps. I would use this as the jumping off point for the ceiling fixture. If you like chandeliers, maybe a curvy bronze chandelier with a few crystals hanging down (I mean a fun & flirty one, not a gaudy 70's number, lol!). Or you could go with a straighter lined one -- look at Pottery Barn Lowell & Veranda, for examples. I don't necessarily think the red side chairs are wrong...but I'm curious what bothers you about them. TO me it's just that they're kind of floating there with no real purpose. Like, if that's meant to be a reading area or a place to have a cup of tea, they need a little table between them. Think about what you want that space to be, and then you'll know how to address the chairs. Hth! Leigh

Someone said: I believe the Houzz experts (and I am NOT one!) suggest the TV be 2/3 the width of the TV cabinet. No no no no no. The TV cabinet needs to be at least 25% wider than the TV. Wider is always better. There is no minimum size for the TV. Do not hang that guitar between the windows. Do not hang anything between the windows. Your curtains are perfect. Hang the guitar on the wall just left of the TV, get some art for over the sofa, and add just a touch more red to echo the arc lamp (which is tres cool, BTW). You've done a great job so far. You've got this.

What a beautiful living room you have made. The credenza under your TV is particularly gorgeous. Here is what I would consider doing if this were my room- just to give you ideas to play off of for a start. I would begin by finding some blue, patterned throw pillows for the sofa and the arm chair. I like Indian block prints. They are classic and fresh. What I have shown is not exactly bargain, Target/Home Goods, but aside from the Ginori, it's not terribly expensive either. Here are some from John Robshaw: And for the blue arm chair, I thought something like this could be fun: Next I would find an orchid or cyclamen for the table by the blue arm chair. I am partial to cyclamens, so here: I would look for a silver cachepot. Here is a simple one from The Enchanted Home. I like how the silver echoes your side table by the sofa. I would like a much simpler/more modern silver cachepot, this is all I could find right now. Then for the coffee table, I would find a few pretty and interesting coffee table books: Assouline, Phaedon, Taschen, Rizzoli all have great, colorful, conversation sparking titles available. It is very common to put stuff on top of books on coffee tables. That is not my thing. I would rather just see something pretty next to the stack of books. Maybe a bowl or a vase in this Ginori pattern (Orientale in azalea): Lastly the table between the sofa and arm chair could use a lamp perhaps. I would look for something sculptural in crystal. Like this from Horchow: Your room is lovely and will come together more and more over time. Don't rush yourself. Wait to find things that really speak to you, so that you infuse the room with your personality.

Hi. Sure hope the kids are back at school soon! What an experience! Paint color: The first photos you showed, the sofas did look a little purple. Second series, they did not. So, I would wait until all the elements are in the room and then make a decision. Rug: the size, from my calculations should be at least 6 x 9 feet and preferably 8 x 10. (For the love seat area especially, 8 x 10 is preferred if you want some table on one or both ends . The rug you show appears to have a touch of green in it, so I would stay away from it. Just one more tone to deal with. Esale rugs offers free returns. You haven't posted a photo of a room you like, so not sure exactly what style you want. I can guess, but not positive. You can have both rugs the same. Others here will tell you that you should not. But, I think they can be the same OR coordinate. Either is fine. Coffee Table: I can't say what kind of coffee table you should buy, as I don't know your design goals. My impression is that you are trying to go more contemporary and that you like a little glam. Here is what I would do if I were you. -Get the furniture set in the new arrangement and see how you like the flow. I think you will. It gives people choices and easy in and out.

My first recommendstion is to determine the room-style you seek. Then select non-matching but coordinating pieces. Your wall color is neutral, add color and interest with artwork, accent pieces and pillows. Nice lamps not only illuminate but become part of the room style.

Ours is traditional and formal - with yours having a TV in the room you likely want relaxed and durable, tables for food/beverages and feet.

I can't tell from photo, but is the rug centered on the windows?

Use the two sofas facing idea. Do a wall install for the t v. Where the bench is in this photo, put the two chairs in its place.

Thank you! We put the chairs in front of the window bc we want to be able to look into the yard and drink our morning coffee. The chairs swivel and glide. A bit stuck on the size of coffee table/ottoman bc the area is very big. I like the idea of nesting tables. Was also looking at a really large ottoman but then got hung up on colour

Beautiful and impressive for sight unseen. I agree about some nested coffee tables. How about a small table between the swivel chairs? Then I also recommend tables at the ends of the sofas- perfect for drinks and lamps. Indoor plants will enhance that gorgeous view. Love the earlier idea of an arco floor lamp and hanging the tv on the wall. Some throw pillows and art and maybe some ceramics. Looking great so far so take your time with the rest of the details and please post when you get new items.

As to the legs finishes, I see cool metal tone [sofa] and wood [of tv console]?
- Say the niche is reserved for a certain oval vase and in gold - you could repeat it with this, just example - Overall: 35.5" W x 35.5" D x 14.75" H

I think the room could really accommodate a much larger TV (70") on the wall with a large, minimal console below.

I think a large bronze frame glass top coffee table will allow you to see the loverly rug through the glass.

Select a small round drum table between the barrel chairs.

Select a faux tree for the corner to take advantage of the tall ceilings and direct the eye up.
