Baseboard Height with Low Ceilings

The house is a traditional-style center hall colonial, but built in the 1990s so not truly historic. We’re remodeling the first floor and the GC suggested 5 1/2” baseboard, but our ceilings are only 90”. We have no crown moulding. Is this too tall? Current baseboard is only 3”.

Are you maintaining the traditional/colonial revival style of the house? If so this is a nice traditional base at 3-1/4"

5-1/4" would not be bad, but with the lower ceiling I think the 3-1/4" would be fine.

We have 9 ft ceiling with 3 1/4 and looks small with our crown moulding. My biggest regret is having 3/4 round at the floor, would much prefer thicker base and ditch the 3/4 round.

I've known a couple of guys who were 6'6" and their favourite places were the distant basement corners of their century homes with 6'2" high ceilings. Whatever you call it, be sure there are safe exits. An egress window is a must if any part of it is used for sleeping.

How tall are you? My husband is 6'5" so a 7'4" ceiling would be horrible for him. My personal preference would be to keep the ceilings as high as possible, but I'm used to pre-war buildings where the ceilings are at least 9'6". I have friends in a mid-century house nearby, and my husband stoops the whole time we're there, but it's fine for them. You said you've already framed out the ceiling. My suggestion would be to hang paper where the ceiling will be so you can experience the space closed in at that height. And then you'll know for sure. (that's what we've been doing during our renovations so dimensions don't seem so abstract) Maybe the windows and natural light will offset the lower ceiling?

Yes - I have 82 inches of RO for door currently to the concrete slab. Of course I'll be putting in flooring - carpet. That will take up close to an inch. So I may need to shave a door just a bit. My question is - should I be installing the pre hung doors first - or can I sheet rock then put in the doors after?

I have ceilings that are 7'10" with schoolhouse pendants over the sink that look great, or so I think. ;-) The key does seem to be getting the right proportion for the shade, but I certainly wouldn't let 8' ceilings stop you.

@jackowskib, your ceilings are 18" taller. Theirs are 90" yours are 108".

We’re switching to white trim, but that’s as “modern” as I want to go. I do want the profile to stay traditional, which is also why I was worried about the bigger size.

How wide are your door casings going to be?

90 inches is less than 8 ft. I would go with the shorter 3 1/4 inch.

Casings are 2.5”
