Will someone please explain custom panels to me?
Comments (13)There are "Other reasons" to panel a DW or A Fridge, instead of just to "Hide It". I watch a lotta Home & Garden and DIY Network too. You may have seen the posts in "Kitchen Forum" where somebody asked, "Do I need a DW in my new kitchen"? The answers were "almost" universally yes!! So I don't get this "Latest Fad", Hide the appliances (it will pass). I have looked at probably thousands of pictures of Kitchens both on GW and elsewhere! I have not seen a single (not a single picture) where I could not walk straight up to the Fridge or the DW (Regardless of the "Total Integration" which as mentioned, You will pay "Dearly" for. Both our Fridge and Miele DW are built in and wood panelled. We did that for 2 reasons, One is, we were tired of trying to keep stainless steel "Spotless" The DW is a real problem , you get a drop of water on it, and it instantly "Morphs into a difficult spot to remove". The other reason we did it, is we like the look of wood, and I "Personally think" that the Miele label above the wood looks great, and I like seeing the readout so I know what the DW is up to. "Semi" integreated appliances are quite a bit cheaper than fully integrated ones, and this 67 year old has no desire to "Design to the latest Fad" which as I mentioned is a farce anyway, and most ppl want a Fridge and DW in their Kitchens, so why "Pretend" to hide them????? Comments (28)This has been a nightmare. I didn't even mention the splintered outlet hole in an obvious location they accidentally cut in our floor-to-ceiling pantry cabinet with pullouts that they tried to cover by gluing over a skin, which unglued almost right away and is flopping loose inside. I know it would have cost them, but those kind of mistakes should require a rebuild of the box, no? Ugh....See Moreis this acceptable for custom cabinets?
Comments (4)Custom is not a synonym for quality. Who installed? And didn’t predrill properly for the hardware? It’s not fatal. It just isn’t pretty. But neither is plywood for drawers instead of solid wood or Blum metal. It’s back yard hobbyist buy parts and assemble them quality if that’s the build level. Average 30K quality. Not 80K high end custom. The big point of concern at that quality level is not the plywood drawers or the bad hardware install. That is minor. The real concern is really the finishing material, application, and quality. What was used for that? Its what gets touched, and has to stand up to wear. Custom is not a synonym for quality. Back off the hardware, add some filler, spray a clearcoat, and it will be less ugly. It’s not less functional, no matter what. It’s just cheap and low end. Custom is not a synonym for quality. It’s just a lebel to sell sizzle and not steak. You have to do your quality build level due diligence on the front end, a year ago, when you were getting in their line to get something built. Custom is not a synonym for quality....See MoreUneven cabinets
Comments (8)We had two kitchens installed in our 100+ year old house and both times the toe kick touched the floor. The first one, which wasn't custom, if I remember, left the gap between the cabinet and the toe kick instead of the toekick and the floor. The second was fully custom and the toe kick was made taller to compensate and scribed to the floor....See MoreCindy Everett
