Staircase Wainscotting with Bullnose Corner

Need advice on putting board and batten wainscotting on the walls under and beside a staircase. Should I go to the ceiling or to the existing moulding? What do I do with the bullnose corner on the right? Thank you in advance.

Comments (14)annz - I want to do the reverse but I have to find someone with a miter saw because my table saw max is 45 degrees. If I can do a 50 to 60 degree miter I can snuggle the riser right up to the far side of the corner radius (trial and error). 45 or less leaves an unpleasing gap between the wall, corner, baseboard. It's wonky!. brickeeye - That approach leaves the floor at the curved corner of the wall bare - a very small triangle with no tile (too small for a piece of tile and too big to leave bare). I need to either extend the riser past the corner (miter the riser the opposite way of the picture) or do it this way and bring the baseboard around the corner. Or see if 1/4 inch plywood could be used instead of the 3/4 inch pine riser, which pretty much will allow me to replace the original piece of baseboard and quarter round that went around that corner. Comments (3)We are going to have picture frame wainscoting put in our bathroom, so I've been researching it. Looking at your pictures, I would not do it in your bathroom. You will have major problems with the bullnose corners and especially the curved wall. I can't even imagine doing it. If it were my room, I would paint over the faux painting to give the room consistency, it's too chopped up with only certain walls treated. Especially since there's no clear cut ending to the faux because of all the curved corners. Maybe a nice, long tapestry on the long wall to the left of the toilet. Maybe get someone to paint a mural on the curved wall, since hanging anything on it might be a challenge. Good luck!...See MoreBeadboard or other wainscoting?

I've never pulled anything like that off. I'll have to put more effort into my holiday tables. Mythreesons thanks for all of the great inspiration photos! I see that "anything goes" as far as wainscoting goes. That's good because I love variety. We'll definitely do something other than beadboard. I would definitley like to do recessed shaker panels, just have to make sure my husband is up to it. Maybe it isn't really any more work than the beadboard. That required a lot of cuts and work also. Actually, as I said before he almost cut his finger off doing our stairway beadboard, so if I were him I'd want to do something different!! I appreciate all of the words of encouragement and compliments. It's exciting that our home is finally coming together. Before it was still HOME, but now it's going to be pretty also : ) But of course now we have to do ALL of the rooms over. You can't prettyize one room and then not do the next, and the next, and the next. Linda the windows in our whole house are by Marvin. They have the simulated divided lights which are really great. On the outside the divided lights are made out of some kind of cladding that is armour tight. On the inside the divided lights are made out of wood and they are permanently affixed to the glass. There are spacer bars in between the double panes of low e glass so that the window really looks like true divided lights even though they are not. You have to wash each pane individually, like with true divided lights, which can be a bit of a pain . . . but it's worth it imo for the look....See MoreStair wainscoting around bend, how to make it look good.
Comments (14)Palimpsest - Yes, I think that's what we're going to do, follow the stair skirt exactly. Thanks all, glad I wasn't alone in thinking this was crazy (the contractor is still defending his plan - apparently he doesn't see what we all do, but is at least willing to take it off and redo to match the skirt instead). Going to check it tomorrow and help him with the boxes - we're drawing these with pencil first :-)...See More

last yearA skirtboard would do well in lessening the prominence and busyness of the treads. Wall artwork/framed photos also shown blocked out in some manner of your choice.
