Countertop and sinks out of alignment with vanity doors- worth fixing?

Hi folks, we just wrapped up our otherwise perfect master bathroom. The vanity countertop contractor screwed up and placed the countertop a good 0.5-0.75” off center, meaning that the vanity drawer doors seam is visibly out of alignment with the sink hole. Yes, that threw everything off above (mirror and lights) but we were able to steal a 0.25” here and there where these areas aren’t so bad. But the seam between the vanity doors and the sink hole is visibly off (on both sides of course).

The obvious fix would be to rip the countertop AND pry the backsplash slabs off the wall AND hutch (there’s a hutch between the sinks) and place it perfectly aligned. But is it worth the risk of damaging all these parts?

(Yes, I see that the left faucet fixture is a bit narrower on the hot side- we should be able to correct this by re setting the hot handle).

Lol. This post is from 2006 and I'm still getting notifications of replies to it. We replaced our counter tops with the inexpensive Formica at Lowe's about 5 years ago now. We had a water leak at the kitchen sink which caused some damage that we wanted to fix so while we were ripping things out we decided to replace the counter tops. We did end up having to build a new face for the base of the counters as the thin paneling stuff was not the best, so my cupboards on the bottom are stronger than ever. My husbad also had to cut the piece off the back of the countertops to make them fit as mine weren't as deep as the ones from the store but with a little trim along the back of the counter and nobody knows. I love my kitchen even to this day. The money was well worth it! If I remember correctly they cost about $150? In Sept we will have lived here for 12 years!!

So for all the extremely patient (saintly!) folks who have somehow hung in with my crazy journey to find the perfect master bath vanity...I have finally decided. I'm giving up my lofty, Quixotic dreams of sublime floating sinks atop gorgeous walnut shelves and all the other designer fare and going with IKEA Godmorgon after all. This after another visit to my favorite Swedish emporium, where, hopped up on far too much lingonberry sauce, I walked once again through the bathroom section and suddenly it all spoke to me and made perfect sense. That, and the fact that my favorite salesperson greeted me with a big, warm wave and smile (and this is someone I have peppered with questions for months on end). Ten year warranty. Great customer service (at least in my experience). Ceramic sink, not acrylic (like SO many vanities sold on Houzz). I'm keeping it simple with one 55" Godmorgon in high gloss white + a double Odensvik sink, centered on my 113" wall, with a at least one tall, narrow cabinet on one end for extra storage. This gives us more storage than we'll ever need, plenty of breathing room, the exterior door won't need to be replaced, and I'll have $$ left over to splurge a bit on fixtures and/or better quality tile. And hey! I bought a bathtub today, too! (no, not at IKEA) :-D Thanks for your patience and support!

Wow! For the record, I wasn’t posting a ‘rate my floor plan’. I am not so hard headed that I can’t receive advice, consider alternatives, or answer questions. From reading the responses, it seems our bathroom is so terrible that no one can even give input on how to address the questions I listed in my first post. I find it hard to believe it is so bad as that! Meanwhile only one person has said they have a counter such as I am asking about. I also never said I was unwilling to change things around, just that I didn’t think a simple swap of vanities would work. I even included a bigger view of the adjoining areas to show it would not be as simple as that. What even would you have me tell my architect? That some random people on the internet think her design could be better? I could spend my time trying to justify why we didn’t put the long vanity on the opposite side of the room, or under a window, or why I will be including a toilet room. And then you would either understand why we have come to this design, or you would tear my entire home apart. If you have ever built a home, especially a design from scratch custom home, you know that it is like putting puzzle pieces together. We all have our lists of must haves, wish items, and constraints of design and budget, and time. At some point you just have to decide to be finished. I actually never said I was in the design phase. Walls are not up yet, but none of you ever asked where we were in the build process. I’m an introvert and sensitive person who has had a pretty traumatic last year and a half. It’s taken me a while to feel like I can venture out of my shell and reach out to others-even in a basically anonymous way online. If I had read such negative and generally unhelpful comments a year ago, I would have probably spiraled into a deep depression and doubted myself, what I wanted in my home, as well as the talented professionals I have partnered with to design our home. It’s unfortunate that people can take the time to comment online without taking the time to read the post, think about whether they are giving any constructive advice, or if their tone is derogatory. Not to mention, ignoring the topic at hand. I have been a member since it was just gardenweb some 10+ years ago. From discussions about kitchens, baths, home building, and pools, I used to always find these forums helpful, informative, and a generally positive experience. Asymmetrical bathroom vanity or countertop? Which is better?

Just butt the vanity up against the wall on one side and normal (1-1.5") overhang on the other side. No different than what you would do in a kitchen. How small is the vanity? Remember that you need elbow room so the center of the sink should be a minimum of 15" from the side wall. 20" is recommended.

That would bug me - but i would likely try to downplay it rather than overhaul it with different cab hardware that was a lower key and not so matched with the faucet

There’s no way to overhaul it with different hardware- either remove and replace, aligned or leave as is.

I’d leave as is. The sinks in our primary bath are also not centered on the vanity. What we did was center everything above the sink on the drain. So faucet, mirror, light fixture all line up. I stopped seeing that the vanity wasn’t aligned so long ago that I forgot about it. Until now.

It would bug me in part because I'm sure this was a pricey job, but FWIW, we have a similar issue with both of our current sinks and it's not a big deal. In our bathroom, a pedestal sink is an inch off center to the built-in medicine cabinet/mirror above because we installed a new cabinet in the space where an original built-in had once been (original cabinet had been removed and a mirror placed to cover the hole, and when we replaced it the new cabinet was slightly bigger and we could only widen the opening in one direction because of a joist). When we eventually get around to replacing the sink, we will move the plumbing to align it, but in the meantime people don't notice unless I point it out. In our kitchen, the wall-mount faucet is centered on the cabinet but the whole thing is .75" off-center to the window above it due to constraints of the house framing. In both cases, your eye gets used to it and if you're not looking closely, you'd likely never notice. We debated how to handle the kitchen sink issue at length, and honestly I never even think about that one anymore. Our plumber was adamant that the important relationship was the faucet to the drain, and as long as those two were aligned, it could be out of alignment to either the window or the cabinet base. We chose to align to the cabinet.

That’s right- the faucet and the drain are aligned. Those are drilled precisely aligned with each other.
The issue is that the entire countertop was placed off center, to the left.
So, light + mirror + seems between vanity doors are on one center line, and faucet + drain are on center light, about 0.75” from the others.

I’m very picky. But this I would leave alone. I’d worry about other damage done during the repairs. It just doesn’t seem worth it to me. Perhaps work out a small project trade or monetary settlement if you feel compelled to get justice. When my painters damaged my brand new washer /dryer, I settled for a hallway and bath painted at no charge.

If you posted just the picture I’d have seen only your beautiful finishes, love your cabinet color! If your cabinets are custom, maybe replacement doors could be made asymmetrically so they align under the faucet? Like you, my wonderful contractor left only one “oops” in an otherwise fantastic job. He’d fix it if I mentioned it, but most people won’t notice it. So I think of it as a reminder our crew left that real human beings made our beautiful room, and it wasn’t easy.
