Ginger not growing

Joe Martinez
last year

On March 28th, I planted some ginger rhizomes in a raised bed. I bought them from an Indian market, and they were nice and firm, an not dried out. As of today (May 14th), then had not come up yet.

A few days ago, I watched a video that said that ginger does best with some shade, and I had planted them in full sun, so I decided to move them. When I dug them up, I was surprised to find that none of the rhizomes showed ANY signs of growth after almost 7 weeks. I know it can take some time for ginger to come up, but I would have expected SOMETHING by now. There are no roots, no shoots, nothing. They look pretty much exactly like they did when I planted them.

Any idea why they didn't grow? They had plenty of water. I am in Zone 9 (San Jose, CA)

Should I bother replanting them in the new location, or just eat it and consider it a loss?
