On the other hand I think the $125/sq. foot would be for a run of countertop with a finished front edge, and any other fabrication involved is +, +, +.

It's like the pricing in a big box store for a semi custom cabinet line "10x10 kitchen, these cabinets cost $----" for a run of plain uppers and a run of standard base with one drawer and a shelf. More drawers +, specialty cabinets +, everything plus. And it depends upon your location. Anything involving labor where I live is 30% more than the national average.

I am not saying your quote is reasonable at all. I don't know. But I tend to find the price per square foot involves the minimum.

Is it just 50sf or is it 25 lineal feet of 2' deep counter using a patterned material that requires more matching and multiple slabs? Just completed a 62sf sueded granite kitchen w mitred edges for less BUT the material is also less than 1/2 the cost of most branded quartz. It took 3 slabs but left a usable remnant that saved material costs for another counter.

Also there have been shortages of high demand slabs in many materials.

To add, the $4250 is not just the mark up on the stone. It includes labor for fabrication and installation. Labor is not cheap. But I still stand by my earlier comment. Get another quote so you can feel better about whether or not this is reasonable in your geography. I agree with @palimpsest that the general guidelines on cost per sf are not terribly helpful.

That’s about right for a 3 slab job where you have a lot of big patterns that need matching. If you want a cheaper quote, pick a stone with very little movement, where it can be done in 2 slabs. Or, let them know that you are OK with not great flow of the veining, in order to get the price lower with a 2 slab job. Because that’s the only real way to get the price lower. Give up something.

Do you know how the fabricator is pricing? For ex - some places will say you need 3 slabs ( when you really need 2 and a little more ) so you are paying for all three plus fabrication. That can def balloon the price. The are other fabricators who price by the sq ft because they use the leftovers for vanities or other customers with smaller needs - ie they are only charging what you are using.

Where did you get the 50 sq ft calculation from? Can you post your layout of tops and the color you are considering?

What edge style did you choose ( there are only a couple of "free" ones)? Do you have a large island ? My fabricator has an oversize piece fee because they have to send extra help to the job to lift it. How many cutouts? those are chargeable as well . Many fabricators aren't including them anymore.

This is why you cannot shop ANY countertop material by sq ft expectations and be able to compare apples to apples. It always has to be the final cost.

I'm not saying your price is right or fair, it's just that we need a lot more information to really help you.

And of course, you should always shop around - fabricators pay different prices for their slabs based on how their accounts with suppliers are set up. If they are ordering slab at a time, those costs will be higher. I am lucky that I have a fabricator I use that only does quartz tops and just built a huge warehouse. He buys in bulk and has great prices! My other fabricator can't compete so he focuses on granite, marble and quartzite.

I would get additional quotes to compare, but depending on where you live, that may be pretty typical. (it would be on the low end for our area, where labor costs are very high.) Fabrication/installation was definitely separate from cost of the slab everywhere we got quotes, and all but one fabricator only sold full slabs, so if your layout puts you just over what might fit on two slabs, you may end up spending quite a bit extra. Caesarstone was consistently cheaper than Cambria if you want to look at other options.

I wonder what the cost would be without the 6" backsplash? Have you seen a proposed cutting template?

When I was shopping countertops for a remodel I was told to expect fabrication costs to be about the same as the material price, as a very rough guesstimate….and it ended up being pretty much true. In the end I think it was $11K materials and $10K fabrication. I do remember being shocked to find that the fabrication and installation cost that much but in the end definitely feel that I got my money’s worth.

IMO fake plastic stone is just garbage why not check out real stone and the idea that fake stone in different patterns cost s more is laughable. In Canada we mostly have stone dealers who also fabricate on site so i am not really familiar with the 2 different places for the counter to go but I guess moving the slabs costs extra too. I did a whole 4.5x 9' island with Stratificato from Abet Laminati for $ 1500.00 and my son did the cutting and install . That was delivered to my door . Since I did not want real stone to compete with my huge FP I did this counter which is used in labs and stands up actually better than quartz with heat . IMO so many other choices for counters shop around.

That's part of the pricing being a bit high - the 4cm edge - are they doing a mitred edge? that is costly. Where I am, most engineered stone is sold at 3 cm thickness. I don't often get a call for a taller build up. That could be why I was thinking the price was a bit high.
