Is your garden way ahead of schedule?

I live near Cleveland Ohio. Man, it has warmed up a lot early. My garden is around 2 weeks ahead of schedule. This week it was 80 and sunny. Everything is out of the ground except corn and we are only at our average last frost date. Anyone else having good luck this spring?

Warm temperatures doesn't always mean luck. We've had an unseasonably warm May, with temps in the 90s and approaching 100F. Of course, this puts the kabosh on tomatoes, which will not pollinate. Since tomatoes are done by the end of June anyway because of normal summer heat, and since May is usually prime pollination season, the crop may be largely toast.

My garden is several weeks behind. We have had an unusually cool and wet spring and soil temps are slow to warm up. Can't even consider planting tomatoes or other warm season crops until sometime next month, fingers crossed!

OTOH, annual weeds and the lawn are really appreciating the damp, cool weather and are growing like crazy!!

Interesting point Randy and I've been having an "apex or no apex" debate for about 5 years with this tree. I've already removed one apex that shows as the mini tree-like growth on the top of the 2004 picture. I was going to develop the branch you're referring to as a new apex but at this new potting angle you may well be correct. You lose a lot in the 2d picture but it certainly needs wiring, pinching and generally attending to. Most of the recent work has been revolving around getting the cascading tail sorted with not a lot done up top, but now you've spotted it the next branch serves quite well as an apex at this potting angle and can probably go. A few more hours contemplation coming up then! Thankyou for your comments.

Ha! Good one! Maybe bury several bones in the garden and set a diggin'-dog loose there? I watched one of those "dog-whisperer"/training programs about a young dog who constantly dug up his owners' flower beds. The cure was a sandbox where bones and doggie-toys were buried and several days of the owners digging with the dog in that spot instead of the flower beds. Don't know if it worked long-term but the dog obligingly dug in the sandbox, too.

Mine is a little similar to labrea's. I use Rose Tone (or similar) and kelp or fish emulsion. However, I also mix in synthetics like so: Wednesday Week 1 Organic granular fertilizer Saturday Week 2 Weak liquid fertilizer Wednesday Week 3 Fish emulsion Saturday Week 4 Weak liquid fertilizer Yep, that means I am fertilizing almost once per week, although I pass on the organic "Week 1" about half the time. However I feed very, very weakly. I also look at other factors like the weather. If it's scorching hot and 100 degrees in July then I cut way back. If I miss a week or two because of vacation then that's fine. However, in April, May, and September I am fairly religious about it because those spring and fall flushes are why I grow roses. For my climbers I usually dump something on them here and there when working in the yard, but I do try to give them a good half-strength liquid at least once per month. I should also mention that one reason I feel so often is that I grow a lot of plants (including roses) in containers. My roses that are planted in the garden get about 1/2 as much attention except in the spring when I am fertilizing the annuals all of the time and they are also beneficiaries.

Most of my family is spread all over America, so I take pictures and send them via e-mail and post them in PhotoBucket for them to browse through. I also send them seeds and plants and trees. When we do get together for family gatherings, it is a joy to take them on tours and talk flowers. The grandkids love all the paths, the Koi pond, and all our animals. Their favorite thing I grow is fruit, especially the peaches. :) I do see people slow down and look from time to time and that makes me happy, but our house is built on a hill high up off the road and there are large trees, so they don't see much. Plus, most of the cottage garden flowers are situated in the back and along the north side of our cottage. However, since my DH cleared out the front along the top of the bank above the road, you can now see up into the north side of the yard, and right now it really shows up with all the fruit trees, shrubs and spring flowers in bloom. I hope to one day have a big white gazebo out there to enjoy. It will show from the road and add beauty to that part of our property. Someday, when we add onto the house, it will bump out that way with lots of windows. There will be access to a deck on that north side through French doors, so we will be able to sit out there and enjoy the view all year round. In spring, the view will be heavenly. All the flowering fruit trees and bulbs and shrubs and green grass. In summer, it is partially shaded most of the day and will be a great place to sit and have cookouts. In the fall, we can watch the colors change on the trees and the fall flowers bloom. The Canadian geese migration and enjoy the return of winter birds. On cold, snowy days in the winter we can enjoy the view from the dining room through the new wall of windows and the French doors. On warmer winter days, I will no doubt sit out there too. Visitors Will Be Welcome. Someday... I digressed a bit there...ah hum! Sharing plants and seeds with others on the Garden Web has been one of the most wonderful experiences in my gardening life! I enjoy giving "gifts" from the garden and I have also received generous pass-a-longs from many of you and others on other forums, as well, and my gardens thank you all for it. Mostly, I have all of you with whom I share my cottage garden, and I am very thankful for the friendship and the bond we have on this forum. ~Annie

Some of the yard is ahead- the lawns are going crazy. But the mowing is behind, so far I've only got the mulch patches cut and cleared to the garden beds. I might have to cut the front lawns before the dandilions have gone to seed because the grass is growing so well there. One of the side yards is looking good and I think the wild chives will have time to go to seed before I have to mow there. The trails and such start getting checked this week. Most of the planting ins of the veggie and herb are fairly on time, I still have a bit to do. Big plantings in out back of the bushes and such I'm running on time, those were planned on being done by the end of the month so over the next week or two I'll do those to time up with the coming rain to water them in. Spinach is blown and done- good thing the malabar spinach is taking off now. I'm only a few days past my last frost date, so this is fairly on time for me so far as those gardens are concerned.

It went from wet and cold too much to do much then it's like it skipped the month of warming up and right into summer. So I'm rather behind with the cleaning up on the new gardenyard which is a bummer. That was quite a bit of bad luck for me. The area has grown right past the smotherable and into the I have to cut it down to start with level of growing- something I was hoping would stay mellow for a couple weeks while I got the rest of the gardens set and the lawns mowed up. And I wasn't able to get the full gross of willow staves coppiced out before the hard cold turned too wet too fast and the willow went too green for stave cutting.

Though the early sunny and warm did prompt me to put up the garden shades earlier than I usually do, and that's not a bad thing.

I'm ahead on a couple of things but not due to the weather but do to my "cheating'. Below is a pic of a Park's Whopper Tomato plant that I bought at Home Depo back in late March. I bought it to get a jump on the first tomato but had to enclose it in a light bulb heated box during a few nights that hit the freezing mark. I may get that first tomato by mid-June which will beat my usual plants by ~ 3 weeks...

Another "cheater" was starting some corn inside to plant out in early April, the corn row also had to be tented in with light bulbs on those cold nights, might get some extra early ears when I pick that first tomato...

Otherwise here's a sampling of other plants which are right on schedule

The peas, which should get their 1st picking in another week or so...

The Bush Beans, and watermelon plants (under the cages)

The Spinach, and young Cantaloupe plants...

...and the lettuces.

About average here. First planting of sweet corn is nearly a foot high. Things are very good except broccoli and cauliflower which rabbits hurt badly.
