Olivia Rose Austin in a vase
Comments (6)I added 4 Olivia bare roots this spring, and am most impressed with the growth of this rose, its health, its gorgeous pale blooms and how long they last, the shape of the bush....even, mysteriously, the Japanese beetles seem to leave it alone (I have seen a couple on them, but nothing like some of my other roses.) It may turn out to be my favorite of the around 50 Austins I grow/have grown in the past....See MoreWhat do you think of Olivia Rose Austin??
Comments (81)Hi, Friends, @rosecanadian , Thank you for this wonderful thread on Olivia! How did your Olivia do this 2022 growing season? Do you still have Olivia? I may order a 2nd one! She has the most beautiful healthy growth-no BS ever….. if it wete not for my cold winter stunting her growth it would be perfect! This winter I will burlap her & she will grow well in soring. @Diane Brakefield Your Olivia looked spectacular-hope mibe blooms well like yours someday! @Kristine LeGault 8a pnw Your Olivia above is spectacular! Hoping for the best with my Olivia. Maybe next year will be more healthy. I will burlap her for this winter. MY OLIVIA: My Olivia is 1 1/4 years old. She had severe winter damge before last spring 2022 so she grew very slowly & bloomed a profusion of tiny blooms in spring 2022. It took all season & a lot of fish fertilizer to grow her out. However, she would have grown faster if I had known to use fish fertilizer sooner. When I started using Rose Tone & fish fertilizer she darkened & grew quickly. She finally, this fall 2022, in last few weeks has reached 5 ft & a few of her best blooms. She blooms all the time, but only 6-7 blooms right now-but big-beautiful! She has morning sun maybe 6-8 hrs in summer. She is next to Moonlight in Paris. Now in fall maybe less sun. MIP had winter damage, too, common in my front yard roses. MIP took awhile to recover, too-but in a little more sun & blooms way more profusely ongoing! Olivia Nov. 8, 2022...See MoreOlivia Rose Austin - how's she doing for everyone?
Comments (70)Diane, I wonder, since Olivia is supposed to be small, if you couldn't move her to the shade where you wouldn't ordinarily plant a rose, like under a tree and see if her color isn't any better. The shade might also keep her smaller. You would have her spot for RR, and you wouldn't really have lost anything whether she lives or dies. The VS Hydrangeas are just blossoming. They're white and chartreuse right now. When I have a progression of the color change, I will post pics. I thought they would be the first to go in this heat. My big leafs are totally cooked, but these paniculatas are fine. I will probably have to move the Blue Enchantresses to total shade. The Endless Summer Originals are doing ok. My grandson cut them back to the lowest node because they fried, but they're coming back beautifully as long as I keep them floating in an over watered bed. I wish we knew if this year is typical of what to expect from now on, or if it is an anomaly. I'm still planting and feeding. I don't want a bunch of baby roses to keep over winter in the garage. Only about half of the rose garden got fed before the heat started, so I waited, but it's been steadily hot, so I'm giving them a light feeding before it's too late this year....See MoreOlivia Rose Austin - 2019 - Zone 8B
Comments (13)That's reassuring to hear, Claire. She looks too delicate to be very hardy, but sounds like she can be grown in colder zones, just maybe not to the same size as in warmer zones, but that's true of almost any rose....See MoreArtist-FKA-Novice Zone 7B GA
