Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Powder room feature wall--please help

Folks,

New construction, powder room 5'6"x4'5". Flooring is white carrara porcelain and vanity is very light (one shade above natural) stained maple. Deciding on the feature wall. Lighting is pendant above the sink on the left of the long wall, to the right is the toilet.

Thoughts:

1. Planning on a full width 36" mirror with a feature wall (the 4.5' one) to be with Porcelanosa Ona in white (textured and polished). Good idea or should the textured tile be on the long wall? How to decide?

BTW I never use a hand towel in a PR just dispoibles and especailly in the age of covid and a waste bin with a lid that closes .

Its a DRY bath. ( no bathing ) why are you treating it like a wet bath? It is a small space - What you do on one wall? Do on four walls. With the freedom that paint and wallpaper can afford.

Light stained maple often goes "pink" and I would be especially wary of that and more especially in combo with your marble.

No clue your selections without visuals...... no clue your inspo. Post it all. But so far? Maybe not.

This goes back awhile now and Rita said it originally and I do agree with her: "Part of what confuses me about the partially tiled wall is usually, when you see a half tiled bathroom wall, it's the bottom half that is tiled and the top half is painted or papered. Here are some pictures. And while these bathrooms are very traditional, the modern ones that features super cool tile, used it on the whole wall- maybe just one wall with their fanciest tile, but floor to ceiling- not ceiling to washbasin. And of course you can choose to march to the beat of your own drummer, which has already resulted in some pretty awesome and thoughtful designs in your kitchen. With this issue, the look is unfinished- like cpartist said, it looks like you ran out of tile." Right now the baseboard is not working at that thickness and I don't think a thick white baseboard is the answer. If it were me I'd have tiled the sink wall all the way. This way you have a pure visual backdrop to your 'features'. And yes paint the baseboard to match the wall for sure but I'd also beef it up.

get a standing TP holder. why are you keeping dark vanity? can you paint it? what about the countertop? what's the new one look like? what kind of floor? black faucets are fine, but they have to work w/the overall look. this is a powder room. you can go bold in here. otherwise, changing out a toilet and mirror isn't going to do a whole lot It sounds as if you're updating, but keeping the same overall theme and look. why? If you want to update, then update it! change it. it's rather dull and very basic. black mirror, black tap, not going to change that. If you're spending the money to redo something, then redo it. There are so many great ideas you could do to make that room really pop. this picture is cool. why don't you do this? I suggest you look at powder room makeovers to get some other ideas.

A black toilet is out. That was a design decision earlier on. My style for this room is contemporary/modern in sync with modern Italian vanity. I do like large florals but thought it might overpower the room. I love colour but hesitate to introduce more then already there- black vanity, white toilet, white/grey marbleized floor & gold accessories & vanity detail.

Post pics of the room. I'm having a hard time imagining a light vanity on the white and gray floor.

With powder rooms, you get the best effect if you wallpaper ALL the walls.

If the floor is light and the wood is light then consider a darker gray wallpaper for some drama.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting and @BeverlyFLADeziner no pictures yet because the new construction is just done with the framing and rough-ins. It is an interior powder room (no windows), 9' ceiling. I had not considered wall paper so far. Are they durable? How often would I need to change them?

@BeverlyFLADeziner The tiles are not in yet and it is time to order them. I was only thinking of a carrara-marble-like porcelain tile (just like the other bathrooms).

Open to suggestions. The vanity is floating (wall-hung) and 12" above the ground.

@JAN MOYER my inspiration pictures above. When you say that I should treat it like a dry bath, are you suggesting that I don't do carrara-like flooring? Clearly, I am a rookie, so please elaborate.

My point and Beverly? There no STEAM in there, You aren't bathing, it is a place to .............you know.

What is the flooring in the rest of the first floor? Hardwood? Tile ? That is the easiest floor in the POWDER ROOM.

A pretty vanity or pedestal sink a wee bit of storage for tp, soa, hand towels ......done

Find a wall paper you love. It hardly needs tile to the ceiling, not does it feel all that welcoming .

Your insps' are so all over the place in feel, hard to say what you may really want .

Begin with same floor as rest of the ist floor . The fewer floor changes? The better.

I think your best PLAN? HIRE an interior designer . For the entire process of all selection for the build.

Your inspiration pictures really have nothing in common, but it just seems like you‘re questioning where to add the textured tiles; behind mirror or on a large wall.

Given the small space and with tiles (I think) becoming too overwhelming on a full wall, I’d aim for a more subtle, creative look behind sink. It’s important to consider how tiles will relate to flooring and consider a smaller mirror than the size you indicated.

Just wallpaper all of it. You do not need an inspiration wall of tile in a small half bath. Pedestal sink mirror lighting small storage basket for TP, towel bar for drying hands after washing, Done! I love dark wall paper in small baths

Wallpaper in a Powder Room is stunning.

If you have an active house hold, parties, children, teens, tile will clean more easily.

The rest of the first floor will be hardwood (white oak). Ours is an active household, young and active boys and this is going to be the bathroom access for the basement (kids' friends will use). This prompted me to go for a marble-look tile. Will tile on the floor and wall be overpowering in that room? How about tiles on the floor only?

@Maureen I thought of a full width mirror to make the little room feel bigger? Bad idea?

Also, considering that the vanity is on the left part of the wall, I guess doing tiles just behind the vanity will not look appropriate.

Now that there are wall paper suggestions, I need help orienting myself to that option. How does one decide whether to do paint or wallpper or tile? the exterior is modern craftsman. interior has modern white trim for windows, doors and baseboards. kitchen cabinets are light stained maple. floor is natural white oak (beige tones). does this make the interior transitional?

the powder room will have a pocket door and will be at the top of the stairs leading to the basement.
