Cedar siding stain choice for new cedar home
Comments (1)I just posted about what I used on my red cedar siding in the Deck Sealer thread. It won't leave your siding looking like it does now (it's not a clear coat), but it looks pretty good. Comments (16)@gracie01 brick veneer (not structural), if old and moisture gets in, can falter and fall. It's not the brick that fails, it's the wall ties holding the brick to the backing material, either wood or metal framing or another brick or stone wythe that fails.Failed wire brick tie. In some cases, through negligence or ignorance there may not even be ties! Edinburgh Oxgangs Primary School veneer wall collapse. No ties used at all, according to a BBC investigation. Brick veneer is largely a 20th C. phenomena, with the first documented use occurring in 1899. As the metal ties rust away, support is lost and the veneer moves. In only one municipality I've built in, were longer-lived stainless ties required. Otherwise there were no requirements re ties. If the mason were supplying ties, count on the cheapest and flimsiest available. In the house we're currently living in, the masons used nails to tie the brick to the structural block. Where the back of the block is visible in the garage, around the end of each nail a quarter sized section of block has fallen off as the nail rusted. The house will be demolished by the next buyer, so there's no concern....See MoreDesperately need help updating 1989 exterior cedar waterfront house!
Comments (32)Terri, I have an Andersen Terratone sliding door and it is NOT the color of what your door shows. Here is what mine looks like. I think the color either changed on your doors due to age and weathering or maybe the company changed the colors. But agree with no white, paint the stairs and splurge on new sliders. I saw your one picture had a sheet up for shade I suppose? How about installing a retractable awning? If you need to block the sun coming into the house, maybe a sun-reducing film can be applied to the windows? LOVE the Crisp Romaine with your brown! I can understand being tired of the brown, or wanting an update. Maybe look at redoing the deck if that needs some love? If you want a change or refresh, get new lights, sliders, awning....you’ll feel like it’s a new place. I usually dislike brown houses intensely but I was in a nearby historic town and spotted this color combo that I loved and maybe you would like the red?...See MoreDoes new cedar siding need to have nail holes filled before painting?
Comments (5)Instead of painting your siding, have you consider CWF or some other semi-clear stain? Your cedar would naturally age over time and turn a darker color and the side that gets the most sun wouldn't age exactly like the rest of the house but it would be a more natural cedar look. Are the nails galvanized or will they rust? If they're not galvanized, you should probably cover them even if its just with a clear spray paint. Edited to add: follow your inspector's advise.
