Is this Asparagus?

I believe this is a baby asparagus - which had to come from seeds from past asparagus. Do you think it is asparagus?

My asparagus crowns are well below what most tillers reach, but your spears likely were pretty severely pummeled. Wait a few weeks before you throw in the towel. Do you have records of when you started to harvest from previous years? That will give you a rough estimate of how close the spears were to breaking soil. If your winter was like most of the east coast, you may need to add a few weeks to last years' date. I hope you told your tiller guy he won't be coming back next year. He could pay for the plants, but losing 3 years is gonna hurt.

I've got grey and red squirrels and chipmunks and none of them has ever bothered with the asparagus at all. I've also got rabbits that visit the yard regularly and they don't touch it, but then the yard is full of clover and other things they like :)

It could be white flies but the growth in your pictures looks like the symptoms of Asparagus aphids. Adults are a greenish grey but what you are seeing may be the newly hatched nymphs. Johnny's has Purple Passion but you have to buy 25 at least ... https://www.johnnyseeds.com/vegetables/asparagus/purple-passion-f1-asparagus-crowns-2225.html Urban Farmer has them in groups of 10 ... https://www.ufseeds.com/product/purple-passion-f1-asparagus-roots/ASPPR.html Debruyn has the best deal by far, worth serious consideration I'm not sure who owns who, a lot of these older companies have been taken over by a few companies, which are very hit or miss with roots, bulbs, woody stems. You might get lucky, but they will charge you even if they do not have proper stock of what they list. Also prices can vary wildly with some companies depending on which "sale" code they give you.

I am growing asparagus from seed just to see how much it grows the first year if I take care of it. The first sprouts looked like teeny tiny asparagus spears, about as big around as a needle. Definitely not as fat as a toothpick. Just like what you would harvest or buy at the store except a very miniature version After they grew a bit more they ferned out, again like a micro mini copy of the grown up ferning plant.

Last year several came up on their own after I got behind on tilling an area where I spread compost that must have had asparagus seeds in it. I let a couple grow. By the end of the season the ferns were about 3 feet tall and about the base was the diameter of a pencil. We'll see if giving this years more water and fertilizer and fewer weeds gives larger plants.
