Is this Asparagus?

I believe this is a baby asparagus - which had to come from seeds from past asparagus. Do you think it is asparagus?

Best guess not deep enough to avoid freezing. What is your normal frozen ground depth? 2-3" anyway I'd guess. Mine never freezes here but I suspect yours does. Next best guess would be insufficient water. I have to keep mine well watered year around but we don't get as much rain as you do - normally. This year is an exception. What and how often did you feed them? I give mine a late fall feeding of a couple of inches of composted manure after trimming the ferns and then again in early spring. Dave

Hi ltilton, I guess you mean, if someone was to Harvest each and every spear as soon as they were of edible size,you could just do that perpetually ??? That of course sounds crazy, but even if it were true, the act of planting the bed with other vegetables,before the crowns start producing spears, and then the spears cut down as needed (the same as any other weed), any spears that came up could be snapped off and chucked into the compost pile. Viola, even the "weeds" are a blessing. Acton_John, If the land was available for me to grow crops, I would and could,.......I would treat them as weeds and plant French Intensive/Bio-Dynamic..... "Square Foot Style" = means: plant something in every square foot, it won't be long (if you don't allow them to be energized by the Sun), that you will be rid of them.

How can I tell if my asparagus fern is dead or I can revive roots?

I was gifted an asparagus fern - s variety i believe- not sire how to spell. But it only has two or three stems an looks quite sickly. iam wondering if i should try to rehab it or try soaking roots and repotting?

Wow! It seems really early for asparagus to be coming up in north Ohio but then I've had a few years when it started coming up in mid March before shutting back down when we had a cold spell. It's not unusual for asparagus to come in fits and spurts early in the season. Once the soil is well into the 50s it will grow no matter what the ambient air temperature is. I would cut anything worth cutting before the freeze as the exposed spears will turn to mush at 26F. You can also add a few inches of leaf mulch on top to try to protect any spears that are just starting to poke out.

I am growing asparagus from seed just to see how much it grows the first year if I take care of it. The first sprouts looked like teeny tiny asparagus spears, about as big around as a needle. Definitely not as fat as a toothpick. Just like what you would harvest or buy at the store except a very miniature version After they grew a bit more they ferned out, again like a micro mini copy of the grown up ferning plant.

Last year several came up on their own after I got behind on tilling an area where I spread compost that must have had asparagus seeds in it. I let a couple grow. By the end of the season the ferns were about 3 feet tall and about the base was the diameter of a pencil. We'll see if giving this years more water and fertilizer and fewer weeds gives larger plants.
