how to style a room with a murphy bed

Hello!

We invested in a murphy bed for our spare room.

I'm afraid it looks too bulky and not sure how to tie it into the rest of the room.

The first idea was to paint the walls white to help it blends in.

Also yes my curtains are too short they are only a temporary fix for now.

Futon is a temporary as well that will be relocated.

Love to hear thoughts and ideas.

Are you thinking of exchanging it for a more "furniture" style? Is it twin or double bed size?

Hmm. Honestly, if exchanging it is an option, I think I’d pursue that. There are a lot of furniture cabinet style Murphy beds that will look nice and be much easier for you to work with styling-wise.

There are numerous sites on-line for the hardware kits, most come with instructions for building your own. The kits range from about $250 to $400, depending on the lifting system (and who's selling). Lumber is additional. All things considered, I would recommend buying the parts rather than playing with diy engineering. Yes, you can use ready-made bookcases, but keep in mind that even unfinished ones are not inexpensive. You can also add your own doors to bookcases, to turn them into partial or total cabinets. The cases to either side of the bed should be slightly deeper than the folded bed, usually 12" to 15". I do recommend that they be attached to wall studs. The concealing cases can be any depth, but 9" to 12" will look good. I find a tracked sliding system easiest, and on one, I did add concealed roller casters because of the deep carpet. Yes, the casters do make it easier to move the cases. I also helped a friend make one, using panels instead of cases for the concealment. The advantage is a slight gain in floor space while the bed is concealed, and the disadvantage is the loss of the shelf space from using panels instead of cases. If you were to fill a 12" deep, 3'x 7' case with books, the total weight could easily be in excess of 500 lbs. The fewer books and art objets, the less weight, but even empty cases can be quite heavy. A double-sized mattress with spring will weigh less than 200 lbs, plus the moving assembly. We are not talking something you can pick up with one hand, so care must be taken to follow all directions carefully. Once assembled, the bed is indeed easily raised and lowered (two hands but little stress, lol).

Sunnysmom, Thanks for yur thoughts. The reason both bedrooms have adjustable beds is because of me, really.... and... I do not have alot of company but as we baby boomers age, we are tending to have extended elderly family members along. Our master (now and planning ahead for smaller house), has the bath attached. Guest br uses the bath across the hall. Sooo when we have company Stephen and I give the bed/bath to guests. We use the guest room. As I broke my neck and back in the past, I can no longer lay flat without extreme pain- hence electric beds. I hope murphy style pull down can be reinforced for the heavier bed.

Lula FL my first thought was actually a mirror, but you would have to find a really lightweight one. do they make sticker mirrors? Why can’t you paint it? If not an option, I would get a smaller, lighter colored couch or a chair instead of the black one. The white is t that bad.

How do you use the room when it's not acting as a guest room? I see the main point of getting a murphy bed being able to flip the room between guest room and a second purpose like an office or a play room. If this were me i'd care most about how it looks when guests are staying there so I'd pull down the bed and then style the room around that in terms of choosing colours to tie in to bedding, placing pictures over the bed etc.

I don't really see how having a sofa in the room can work alongside the murphy bed without overcrowding it -- but why do you need one there? I see you have it folded down like a daybed. If someone likes to take naps in here, couldn't they just fold down the murphy and nap on that?

The room is used for yoga and relaxing. We don't have people stay open and the bedding has been picked out (gray color)

The black futon is a lounge spot for now, but that won't be the forever home.

I wonder if you could attach a plywood panel to it, add some trim work to it, paint it and treat it like a paneled wall??? I’ve never seen a Murphy bed like that. Most are made to look more like furniture or a built-in cabinet when in the “up” position.

We need to know how much space it takes up. Measure the space between the bed and the walls.

I just saw some pictures online of Murphy beds. There is one called the Eco line that is similar to what the OP posted. It isn’t cheap. They have it standing as is or with a sofa in front of it. There is another picture of a bed like this put inside of an IKEA cabinet.
