Ipe outdoor furniture

Thoughts on Ipe furniture for deck dining table and chairs? Love the look of the brown wood. It's a covered deck, and we'd cover it off season. Do you prefer it to gray out, or do you like original tones of wood? I know if I want to keep it brown, I need to treat, right? Thank you! Just don't want to invest in such a set without prior experiences weighing in. Thank you.

Yes, if you want it to stay brown you'll have to oil it. How often depends on how much exposure it gets. Aside from that, ipe makes great outdoor furniture. It's sturdy and splinter-resistant.

I have an ipe outdoor furniture set and I strongly prefer the brown look over the silver weathered look. Would the furniture set still have caught your eye if the wood had been weathered silver instead of chocolate brown?

Mine sits on an uncovered roof deck in the northeast USA. I have to reoil it in the spring to maintain the look, but the results are well worth it. You may be able to get multiple seasons between reconditioning if it's not in direct sunlight.

To provide an idea of how the look changes throughout the year: The left photo shows the set when it was brand new in August 2020, and the middle photo shows it in January 2021. It hasn't gone silver, but it's lost some of its pop. The right photo shows it in May 2021 after I washed and reoiled it (unfortunately I only have this partial photo). I am reconditioning it for the 2022 season this weekend.

We are considering an ipe table and chairs versus cast aluminum. Price approx same. We prefer the looks of the ipe but are concerned about maintenance because we are getting conflicting info. If we get the ipe, we will want to treat it so that the color is maintained. The furniture will sit on a southwest facing deck but will be partially protected from sun under a gable roof. The salesperson says one application per year with a product called penefin. The are also saying that there will be no issues with watermarks. But, manufacturer says to prevent watermarks requires another yearly application of a second product. The price of teak and cumaru are miles apart,cumaru is far less stable. If money is no problem go teak for both parts. The only way both areas are going to look the same is both areas are the same material. John

I looked at storage boxes but sometimes space and spending money on that may not work for everybody, and bringing them in and out was annoying on a daily basis... I bought a giant square cover that goes over the sectional couch and then the fire pit props out the empty corner - just throwing that over everything was the cheapest and easiest solution for me. I'll bring cushions in for the winter and use the same cover over the furniture frames, even if I have to buy a new cover every year or 2 it still made the most sense. Any recommendations for patio furniture that is comfortable WITHOUT cushion, please post! :)
