ornamental grass division

We divided a large clump of ornamental grass a month or so ago and replanted some in planters and some along our driveway for additional separation/ privacy from the neighbors on the other side. Our grasses that we did NOT divide are beginning to come back but the ones we divided show no signs of growth. Is it common for them to lag behind after division or have we killed it? We fertilized and they’ve gotten plenty of water. Thank you!

What kind of ornamental grass? It could make a difference.

I’m not 100% certain (it was here when we moved in 3.5 years ago) but I believe it is maiden grass.

I am in search of a small clump of Pink Pampas grass. I seem to be collecting grasses as I currently have two types of maiden (all green and varigated (white and green)), and white pampas grass. Lawn Grass fertilizer and Ornamental Grasses?

The only ferts my grasses get is an occasional bit of compost tea, very dilute. Apart from that, they get nutrients from decomposing mulch and that's it. Ornamental grasses really don't benefit from overly fertile soil, and can get too floppy if there's too much nutrient. I remember reading, on this forum, someone's experience with lawn ferts and A. donax, and I believe it was a positive one. I've never grown it, so I can't speak to it's need for ferts. I wouldn't put any Weed-n-Feed type stuff anywhere near any ornamental grasses, but I don't use any of it anyway. I'm trying to get rid of lawn, not encourage it.

Hi, They are pretty long, not variegated. I can't say for sure what type it is as my mother in law had it installed when she was still with us. I have ALOT to share so that is not an issue. I don't know that I need day lilies at the moment but I will take a look at them online. I am searching more for veggies right now. Thank you!

Dividing and transplanting can be a shock to the system so not entirely out of order for those to be a bit late in their appearance. Miscanthus is a warm season grass so it should get going again as soon as the temperatures stay warm, especially at night.

never fert a recent transplant... its stressed.. not hungry ...

Grasses don't really start growing until it gets hot consistently- mine are just beginning to get going a bit now and I'm a whole zone warmer.

Agree with above. In Zone 5, you might need to wait for the soil to hit 60F before you get any growth. The undivided ones may be warmer.
