Comments (5)plan 1 with changes; the 42 in walkway on the sink side of island should increase to 48 in minimum... Lengthen the entire island section. the 5ft between bar stools and pantry area can accomodate some island real estate-move the end into that space a little more-possibly curve that end section-semi circle or the like.Then as you move back toward the dining room part of your space I would decrease the depth a bit and go with one level-counter height-and elongate the look and extend the island into that space near the dining area.Seems to be a corridor kitchen-the bar stool end is island-like-but your core area is not really an island-able space. I would play up the corridor aspect by creating this more galley approach -keep the walkway open and not put the frig over on the left as in plan 2. could be a great open look with a contemporary vibe....See MorePlacing Fridge in Pantry?
Comments (10)For more info on posting pictures and everything else, check the READ ME FIRST thread that we try to keep on the first page of titles. I am usually a stickler for keeping the working area condensed, but that's more in reaction to kitchens that are too big for comfort. You have other constraints. A lot of fridge tasks are storage oriented, (i.e., not cooking oriented) and a lot of them are dining room things rather than kitchen things, so your plan could work. Do some more shopping, however. Fridge drawers are expensive. And euro style undercounter fridges are not nice to live out of (been there, done that). You might find that it's more practical for your budget to go with the full sized SZ. I totally get the counterspace. One thing you can do is make sure the sink is at the end of the island, with just enough top on the end side to set something down. That will maximize the connected space. Before you go with the drawers plan, do a carefully planned out map of where everything goes? Where is your dish storage? Where are the glasses? Where are your knives and prep tools? Baking supplies? Pots and pans? You might end up figuring that one large fridge in the kitchen, with storage for less used items in the pantry, is a better arrangement for your life than the extra counterspace in the kitchen. Also, you can use the dining table as spare counter space. For instance, it's a great place for stashing loaded trays of cookies (either awaiting baking or cooling). Comments (5)I remember when you first posted as I wanted to help advise you but my old eyes have a hard time reading drawings that have so little contrast. Is it possible to repost a better, brighter picture of your drawings? And make sure appliances are labeled and aisle dimensions are noted. I'm guessing you'll get more responses if you make it easier for us to see your situation better. I prefer a 48-54" aisle. Comments (6)Tammywv, I'm right handed, but my dw is on the left side of the sink, and I don't remember having to adjust--it just works. I load from the right side of the DW, then unload my dishes from the left side, directly into upper cabinets in the left corner, so you'd think that would be awkward, loading on one side and unloading on the other, but it's not. I'd like to be able to move the DW to the other side of the sink to get it out of the prep area, but there is an opening to another room on the right side of my sink. Do you keep your dishes in the upper cabinets in the corner to the left of the dishwasher? It looks as if you have only 12" between the DW and the perpendicular counter, so unloading dishes into the corner uppers would be easier from the left side of the sink. GW discussions-DW left or right of sink? GW discussions--DW in prep zone. I understand your hubby's resistance--not every kitchen needs a prep sink, but if an island is used for prepping, a sink will make it much more convenient and efficient. And if you have a helper, that person can use the space between the sink and stove as prep space, and can load or unload the DW without being in the same aisle in which you'll be prepping.
