Windows Remodeling Design Dilemma

Need some suggestions for the half moon pediment

We just got new black windows. We thought the black would update our house... We need suggestions on what to do with the half moon pediment. My husband painted them black, however, he still does not like them. We have looked into filling them in with brick. However, other suggestions are appreciated.

You might want to look into Romabio masonry paint — https://romabio.com/masonry/. There are photos on the website that show white painted homes with black windows and its really quite stunning. Show it to your husband and see what he thinks too. That would certainly update your exterior!

Would you fill in both?

I think you have really nice brick. I wouldn't paint it.

An arbor over the garage would take the focus off the half moon.

Awwww, what a cute little girl! I hope no one buys her home/plant as she's building a nest in it! That fuzz on her beak was nest material. I'm not sure what type of hummer she is, but the males never nest.

I haven't seen any mention of the tall white trumpet lilies. I suggest Lilium trumpet hybrid 'Emerald Angel' which is white with a green tint. It grows 3-5 ft and blooms in July. The trumpet lilies perfume the whole garden when they bloom. I have always been extremely fond of Datura. They are nocturnal, but they don't close up at the first ray of dawn. Some are extremely fragrant. There are several different species and cultivars to choose from. Colors range from pure white to cream and pale yellow. There are lavenders and whites with purple edges and throats. They have large, upfacing, trumpet shaped flowers. They are a herbaceous perennial in warmer climates and a reseeding annual in the colder zones. I liked the suggestion of Veronicastrum virginicum (culvers root). The tall white flower spikes seem to glow in the moonlight. Same goes for Aruncus dioicus (goats beard).

The 'half moon' (as you describe it) window is completely inappropriate for your home. Yes it dates it right to the 1990's - and not in a good way. I would do a rectangular transom window, properly installed, if you are looking for more light. Also, as promised by others above, remove the shutters on the double windows. You thought that installing black windows would update the house. Did it?

I don't think you can brick in an arch without a lintel to support the weight of the brick and you don't have them

I don't think the black windows complement the color brick you have. Now it's time to look into limewashing the brick. See images below.

Painting the arch is the simplest and cheapest solution. Don't have tunnel vision about this project. Do the rest of it and the painted arches will work out just fine.

You need $$$ for a new landscaping plan so remember to budget for that.
