Black spot fungicides

I am researching fungicide treatments for my heavily diseased climbing roses. It has been a challenge to find much information on curative fungicides that can kill black spot fungus. The main result you get when looking up black spot cure is a bunch of preventative sprays. I am asking for your opinions and experiences with what to use to eradicate the thriving population of black spot fungus on my plants.

Virtually all fungicides will be prophylactic (preventative) rather than curative but any containing maneb as the active ingredient (Mancozeb or Fore) may work curatively.

I would still be inclined to remove as much of the disease affected foliage as possible before spraying every 3-5 days for a period of a month or so.

And follow all other cultural suggestions to reduce or eliminate the conditions under which black spot prefers to grow.

The black spot colonies currently on the leaves will not disappear no matter what you or I do. Those black spot infected leaves are doomed. Your only approach is to spray a fungicide, I use the Bayer fungicide, to prevent the spread to uninfected leaves.

There are two solutions to black spot infection:

1. Start spraying susceptible varieties preventatively before it gets a stronghold, and spray on a regular schedule to keep the prevention effective.

2. Grow only black spot free/resistant roses which do not need spraying.

Yeah didn't know that when I bought them on impulse. Saw 'em at Home Depot and was like, "Yeah, I'd like some of those." Been working down the row, planting the tomatoes, peppers, etc. Doesn't help that everything is clay! (See pic: http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/tomato/msg061246098308.html?15 ). I've just been winging this whole thing. I'm only planting one. Got a mound 4in high and about 3ft wide with a lot of manure worked in and about 2 shovel-fulls of Miracle Gro garden soil. I've read variously to fertilize because they are heavy feeders and others that say don't fertilize a lot if at all (I forget why not), so I'm taking a middle road (I know that's a logical fallacy, the middle road is not necessarily the truth, but it seems like a good compromise is this case). Wondering if I should peel away as much of the peat pot as I can (after soaking it ofc) since peat is very acidic; I dunno about peat pots though. The last tomato I planted though had a lot of roots growing through the peat pot, guessing it probably true for these guys.

Thanks for all the advice... sorry I haven't responded, we had a family emergency here. Thanks ltruett: yes, you are right about the climate here. I also said the lawn "Looks" dormant. I'm not sure it is, that's just how bad our grass looks. If you look at Lou's post above, the pic of his building site shows a strip of grass down by the date stamp. THAT is what our yard looks like. The soil underneath looks very much like his build site too. I talked to an organic lawn service today...They came out and looked at the yard and they are going to give me an estimate on service for treatment as well as maintenance like mowing and weeding. (we have about 55000 square feet of sod to cover)..I should be talking to them tomorrow. Otherwise I will probably go with the compost/cornmeal and see how it goes. It has been so warm here lately I feel like I need to get this completely eradicated before it gets too warm and wet (which I figure gives me about 6 weeks)... by the way ltruett, your yard looks beautiful.. but you do have a lot more shade than we do. Most of our yard is in full sun. (more like Lou's) Still, if we can get close to what either of you have, I'll be happy. :)

Oh thanks so much for all your replies....I now have two choices, other than Bayer. The first was given to me by a rosarian that I have mentioned before. Her name is Victoria and she is from Regan's Nursery in Fremont Ca. Last year, when I had black vine weevils, she suggested beneficial nematodes and that worked great. So when I told her I had black spot, she asked: "Do you have lawn sprinklers?". When I said yes, she asked if any of the water was blown on the roses. Since I had been watering at night, I didn't know. So I checked the next evening and sure enough the roses got a light spraying. When I told her this, she suggested changing the timer to early morning so that the water could dry off during the day...If this works, I'll do handsprings!! If it doesn't, I'm going to try the milk spray that Jeff Rivers suggested, thank you very much. Michael, I am upset about my babies. I don't have many I know, but they are all gorgeous (in my eyes) and I don't want to plant the next 7 bushes without knowing how to take care of them properly. Windy once again. Sorry. ak

My camera refuses to take good up close pictures(can't be the operator :)) but here is a picture of the suspected problem tip. Its a bit fuzzy but the claws are actually there but they are a dark brown color and usually die shortly after emerging. Hopefully these pictures come out in the post. What I was told years ago by the knowledgeable employees at my locally-owned garden center, confirmed by things I have read thru the years, is to use Mancozeb if roses are already infected. I seem to recall that it will damage flowers, and that you need to spray the entire plant, as it is not a systemic treatment. Hah hah, as if it's possible to cover every leaf top and bottom. I agree with GardenGal about pulling off all infected leaves, taking care that your black-spotty hands (and the leaves you are removing) don't touch uninfected leaves. It's an unpleasant task, in more ways than one. I line a 10-quart metal pail with one or sometimes two plastic grocery bags, collect the diseased material, and tie off the bags and put them in the garbage. (Don't leave the uncovered pail of diseased material sitting around where the breeze can catch the spores.) Good luck. Black spot is my bane.
