Pool mottling in new pool-need advice

I had a pool finished in February of 2022. They used Coastal Blue plaster by WetEdge. It is a salt water pool. Within 3 weeks I noticed mottling. I contacted the pool company and they said it was "strictly" chemistry. The chemistry was balanced but I asked the pool cleaner to follow their recommendation for an acid bath-adding 1 bottle of muriatic acid. Brushing was done, etc. No improvement. They came out again yesterday and agreed it wasn't the pool cleaner causing it. They suggested mostly draining the pool and scrubbing affected parts with acid. I want to research this because I've heard 2 things:

The acid can affect the integrity/life of the plaster.

Even after the acid the mottling may soon return. They said they've done it hundreds of times on new pools and it hasn't come back.

I've asked for something in writing to ensure the plaster will be redone if it comes back.

So-life of plaster? Other thoughts appreciated.

To try to get to the bottom of the issue, it all starts at the beginning.

Was the pool properly cleaned and prepped prior to plaster application?

Were the weather conditions acceptable to apply the plaster?

Did the plaster contractor add too much calcium to the plaster mix? There is a suggested limit to the amount of calcium added to a plaster mix to help speed up curing.

Was the pool filled immediately after plastering? We always truck water in after plastering to fill it as fast as possible. Water is part of the curing process. A sequestering agent must be added during the fill as well.

With the immediate fill, we can start the filtration system immediately.

Was the water chemistry checked and balanced upon filling? Daily testing in the AM and PM is critical. This should be carefully monitored and adjusted for a 2 week period. The first few days are super critical. Your fill water whether from a truck or from your house should be tested also. You need to know what your putting into your pool so you can prepare the proper chemical balance.

Was the pool brushed twice per day for 2 weeks?

Automatic cleaners and wheeled concrete vacuums should not be used for at least 2 weeks. A vinyl vac head with brushes should be used to vacuum debris.

Salt should not be added for at least 30 days post plaster. If you can go longer without salt, it's even better.

Salt systems are great, but they require close monitoring of pH and Total Alkalinity levels as they creep up. A weekly addition of a sequestering agent is recommended and there are types designed for pools with salt systems.

The water testing does not stop after the 2 week period. The more you can test, the better handle you can get on the balancing.

The acid wash may clear some of the mottling. Too strong a solution can etch the surface and make it rough.

If the pool company can assure you in writing, the plaster will be ok after an acid wash and they will take responsibility, then go for it. You stated they have done this hundreds of times. Sometimes the issue you have will slowly clear up.

We usually handle the start up for our clients. The water chemistry is tested 2 times a day and adjusted for 2 weeks. We also record our test results.

If a customer is dead set on doing the start up, I encourage them to use this method.

Adding chemicals for adjusting must be performed a certain way. For instance, muriatic acid must be diluted in bucket of pool water and added to the pool in small increments. Pouring a gallon of acid directly into the pool, especially walking the perimeter, will damage the plaster.

I agree about A&S and issues. They do eventually get it right and do build a decent pool but they have perpetual project management issues. OTOH, Seasonal World has made some very significant strides since they right sized a number of years ago. While gunite is relatively new for them, they are using the right people. I do still need to see an in progress project and want to see their customers pop in here for reports though. Other decent gunite builders in my area are Swim-Mor and East Coast Concepts. Blue Haven in our area is OK but seems to have made some recent internal changes that may have an impact. Scott

Sounds like the low water cutoff might be going in the light fixture. Test for power at the light junction box where the light cord meets the hard wiring and see if there is still voltage at the light cord when the light flickers. If so the fixture is bad and needs to be replaced.

Need advice on Pool Enclosure and Pool House

Hi Lax There are definitely gaps to the enclosure. The whole thing sits on a rail system (ours has 3 parallel) and each module has to be able to telescope over each other therefore there has to be wiggle room. The company tries to compensate by using rubber flaps along the perimeter of each section but they certainly don't keep the cold out. Also, the building has an R-value of only 5... Our unit was manufactured 4 or so years ago and since then, they have greatly improved the technology of the overall unit so we've been told. But since we saved a HUGE chunk of change we don't mind dealing w/ a 9 month season instead of possibly 12! There is a guy here in CT who tried keeping his pool open 12 months the first year he installed the enclosure. His pool is only 12X24 yet it cost him TONS to keep the heat in. His enclosure sits b/ a large shed for one end wall and his house for the other. He installed a huge gas heater in the shed to blow hot air into the enclosure but found it to be too costly. Now he shuts down the day after Thanksgiving and re-opens April 1. He has a lot of sun year round which is a big help. You may not be able to actually heat year round w/ gas/heat pump w/o spending a fortune but if you have a lot of sun exposure you'll be amazed at how hot it gets inside due to the greenhouse effect. A woman in TX uses hers year round; she installed a large electric heater like those found at the entryway of Lowe's/Home Depot. Even in the winter when she gets some snow, she told me it was so warm due to the sun she had to turn off the heater and open the windows! Her enclosure is HUGE: the pool alone is 60' long! Wish we didn't have a tall tree line behind our house; lose our sun by the end of Oct. The trees belong to the backyard neighbor so I can't touch them... Keep us posted! Joanne

Hi simpledreamers, Where'd you get that recipe'? It happens to be exactly what we used. Sounds like your pb follows instructions about as well as mine. Step one: call swg and tell them your situation and see what they say. if nothing else, you have the "official manufacture's words" to work with. Go from there. My db is 4 weeks old. I'll tell you how they did mine, but I can promise you... my pb did nothing on any type of schedule, and anything he did that worked seemed as much luck as anything. My finish is not perfect, and probably could've been better, but all in all, I'm pretty satisfied with the plaster. About 36 hours after they finished plaster, they dumped about 12 gallons of muratic acid in my 18000 gallon pool. That's all they did. Since my pump wasn't hooked up, there was virtually no circulation for the next 48 hours. I brushed it with a stainless steel brush (per swg's instructions), 2-3 times a day for next week, dwindling to once a day, and less as time passed (and I got tired of it.) I think it completely changed colors. My memory is foggy, and so was the uncirculated/filtere water... and I was so mad at my pb, mostly bc of a leak in my spa that I finally found for him 2 weeks later. On Dec 14 2023 I have a new pool finish wetedge indigo blue. Within 5 days I notice discoloration. I don't know ifif it's

mottling. What was the outcome? Did you get it fix
