keep chickens out of garden
Comments (6)Razor wire and machine guns!!! That was too funny! I actually have been thinking of staking a couple of my golden retrievers out in my garden, except I hate tying up dogs! My dogs can't run loose with the chickens. Or else it's dinner time. I would fence it off but we don't clip their wings. We live in the woods and we don't want to leave them defenseless. And especially in case we forget and let a dog out. Already happens once in a while. I'm thinking about trying to put chicken wire around the vital plants that are to easy to dig up and putting mulch around it. Last year I had mulch and it all ended up in my walk and in the dry creek bed I made in it. So this year I decided no mulch. I'm thinking the chicken wire would catch their attention. Maybe I can wire it up!! Shoot some voltage into them!! Just like an old circus show, dancing chickens! Well that won't work. My DH just said if its on the ground it'll just ground out. Oh well... What is a chicken tractor? I'm picturing a special "shoot" for them to walk to through to their designated area. We free range our birds everyday in the afternoon. Like I said, share time with the dogs. What do you two think of my chicken wire idea? I know they can't get through it. Get frustrated trying too....See MoreSebright Gardens?
Comments (3)I can strongly recomend Seabright. I first ordered from them in 2008. Kirk is really helpful and friendly to deal with. For anyone from Canada thinking to order from them, the certificate fee they charge to get the plants across the border is half or less than most other places I've checked. I like that they have some of the older varities that other nurseries have quite carrying. They also have the new ones but they are very generous with the older ones. Below are some picitures of the sizes that arrived for my first order. Glory was amazing at 13 eyes. I have taken a division off of it to share already....See Moresebright garden ? :(
Comments (4)well suprisingly enough , our order got here today , my friend went to the PO to pick it up and it smelled bad in the PO when the clerk gave her the 2 box it was our boxes that smelled bad :( well one of the box the leaves are all white and yellow like in autum , only 3 hostas still have some green leaves , the second box the leaves are all rotten , rotten on some to the crown , some roots browning soft , just plain mealted leaves , bad bad condition and the smell ....some name tags that wore on the leaves have just fallen off with the mealted leaves ..... so called sebright , left a message , called back , and their being very generous and are replacing our 50 hostas , we do understand they didnt ship bad plants.....just this time we will have it shiped to a US adress and go cross border ourseves to pick it up , will be a day to do that but hey less time then 2 weeks in the mail right ? seem the british colombia border as done that quite often , what we cant get over is the custom agent had to open one of the 2 boxes to get the phytho certificate in it and it was in the rotten box , so dont tell me the idiot agent didnt see or smell the rotten plants ? some inspection.....anyway , we are happy we will have our order replaced hoping everythign is still in stock and available to us ..... so people in Canada if your ordering from oregon or in the us close to the british colombia border be warned of their bad customs service and maybe request an alternative ship the usps ;)...See MoreVisit to Sebright Hosta Gardens in Oregon

They also have another sales area with various other types of plants, such as some sedums, shrubs, heuchera etc. It's a very large place. I think they have over 600 varieties of hosta in their catalog this year, and most if not all are also available for purchase at the nursery. They sell over 100 varieties of ferns plus many epimedium. Most of the ferns are also available on site as well. They also have a ton of the newer varieties of hosta in another greenhouse that they'll be adding to their sales area every year. They get the tc from various sources, but Kirk shared with me that it's their policy not to sell them until they reach a certain size. Usually around gallon size or slightly under. He's worried about their reputation and doesn't want baby plants croaking on people, which is understandable.
