Another kitchen island pendant spacing question

last modified: 2 years ago

I searched and there are a lot of these, but like everyone else I've done the research and just want another set of eyes to make sure I haven't completely just missed the mark and overlooked something completely obvious.

The facts: gut remodel of our entire house. Kitchen is open to breakfast room on one side, and open to family room/great room as well. 10' ceiling height. Kitchen island is just over 9' long (112") and 5' wide. We have 3 pendants that are 10" diameter. Clear seedy glass shades. We have quite a lot of overhead can lights when working in the kitchen, so while these will provide some task lighting, they are more to provide a lower level of lighting at night and/or just to look good. They will normally be on, but on a dimmer so likely not full brightness (just a little extra light - more ambiance than task lighting). The sink is centered in the island, the island is centered with the range, which are also all centered with the fireplace on the other end of the great room.

I originally did the 1/3 rule and split the island into thirds and placed one in the middle of each section, but that would put the edge of the shade ~13 from the end of the island, and I didn't want them that close to the end. So pushed the left and right pendant in towards the middle a couple of inches so that the edge of the shade is now 17" from the end of the island, and there is 24" between the shades on the middle (34" center to center).

Meeting with our electrician later this week to make sure we like this location before he actually pulls the wires through the ceiling and installs the boxes. Lights are already purchased, island and countertops already done, walls painted, floors in, etc. So nothing can really change at this point other than where we hang these 3 pendants. (just noticed that the 62" below should be 61")
